THE SAMOAN CRISIS. [Newspaper Article] — Eden Free Press and Eden District Advertiser — 12 April 1899

TUE SAMOAN CE1SIS. As Metnnfa and Chiefs continue to ■ defy the Treaty, Admiral Crantry summoned Consuls and senior naval officers and read a memorandum calling on the Consuls of the three powers to stop the provincial go yernmcnts illegal acts and make peaco in Samoa. The English and American cousuls agreed, also the captains of the warship Philadel phia and H.S1.S. Porpoise. 'JT ? German Consul, however, protested. A copy of the decision was sent to Mataafa. The German Consul issued a counter proclamation, de claring the Admiral's proclamation untrue. Kataafa declined to take any notice of the Admiral's pro clamation, consequently the British and American forces landed, and their vessels bombarded Mataaf.i's camp, but the enemy took sheltt-r in the bush. H.M.S. Porpoise ■shelled the village east and w. st of Apia, and the U.S. ship Philadel phia fired 400 shots per minute, while the lloyalist also kept up a steady tire. WE have bad many opportuni ties of observing the move ments of the conservative element in the Legislative Council on matters of a Liberal na+ure and also many threats from Premier B^id to reform that recalcitrant body, ail without resolt other than that House contin ues to exist on its old lines ; but now a more serious form of obstruc tion presents itself to bo dealt with, name1)', the rejection oE the "Federal Enabling Bill which has quickened Mr, Keid's pace, with the detei-mn ation to swamp the Uppei Ilonse by an overwhelming number of Labor members, miner® and any one else who believe in Mr. Reid. We await this bold stroke of pol icy anxiously. The "Age" dealing in a leader on Monday last with oar Councils troubles, says:— Saul amongst the prophets was a : trifle compared with the o.igemess of the Australian Conservatives for a remedy for deadlocks.
