To the Editor of the McIvor Times. [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 7 August 1863

To the Editor of the Mclvor Times. Sir,--Mr. Furze never sues-he dislikes law-yet scarcely a court passes without Mr. Firze putting in an appearance, and if beaten, he acts upon the adage, " try again," until possibly (as in a case to-day), he tires the patience of his victim, and principle becoming a sacrifice to expedi ency, he gets an offer of perhaps one-third of his claim, irrespective of costs, rather than the defendant waste his time in at tending upon the court, and MIr. Furze gladly clutches at it, vouchsafing a sort of a grim smile of satishaction. Ithas however come to the defendant in the case alluded to, that the tendered compromise has been attributed to a dread of unpleasant questions being propounded to him. Now he distinctly assures \11. Furze and his friends, and he does it by way of caution, that he, the said defendant, does not stand in any such awe, and is able to give such an account of himself and his career, if required, that will place Mr Furze in a prejudic...

WHETHER the Town Council was induced to build the new Town Hall by the per suasive eloquence of Mr. Shakespere, or the negative support of the JM'Ior News, we know not; it is pretty certain however that the undertaking is rather too great for them to deal with in a manner that will prove creditable to them as a body. SEveryone who takes the slightest interest in the experiment of local government at Heathcote, has been expecting to hear something concerning the appointment of the Clerk of the Works, when Mr. Flanagan came up. It will be remembered that at a late meeting of the Council, a letter was received from Mr. Flanagan, re wagcs.' *-(smecure)"t o *-4he 2lcirt: O-i0 e Works until he came up, as he was squan dering the money instead of supporting his family in town. The question was thus raised as to whether the Clerk of the Works could not he dispensed with in the present forward state of the building. Cr. Walsh stated that a Clerk of the Works was necessary, but he thought Mr....

(To the Editor of the McIvor Times.) [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 7 August 1863

(To the Editor of the ,c.lcor Times.) Sm,--The Despatch of last Saturday states that the Times report of the last Hospital General Committee Meeting, as well as that of the Mechanics, are "wilful and corrupt misrepresentations." I cannot say- that the exact words used by Mr. Furze were as reported by the Times, but this.I do know, that Mr. Furze made some kind of a statement-something like the tone-of a bear in a hollow tree-which Mr. Carkeet, who sat next to him, must have eangit, but. took very good care not to mention in his report (why)'? I happened also to have been at the meeting alluded to at the Hospital, and Ido say that the Times report was nearly correct, whilst that of the News and Despatch were suppressed where anyone connected with those papers are mentioned. Yours, &c., D. E. F.

(To the Editor of the McIvor Times) [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 7 August 1863

(To the Editor of the ,fclvor Times ) Sm,-Rodney has always hitherto: re turned such honest and liberal-minded representatives as to excite the envy and admiration of the whole country; and, in fact, any former member for Rodney would always stand a fair chance of being placed at the top of the poll in any .other district, if he were to allow himself to be put in nomination. Without any organisation among ourselves, we: have hitherto snc ceeded in baffling the crafty designs of a most uncompromising foe. The great liberal stronghold of the colony could neither be underminel by the most skilful body of sappers, nor her walls scaled by the most determined assailants. Their former mad efforts have only provoked our laugh tor or. contompt;.. but lot us not,: however, repose in any fancied security, for, without any union among themselves, the liberal party may soon suffer an ignominious de feat. A general election must soon happen, and no doubt a host of wretches, wearing the garb of pa...
