A ShoalhavGii Letter To Miss May Majotk, Miltosj-. ' Dear M-iy, — Things are awfully — most awfully—- quiet in this com munity, but with the approach of the winter season we look forward to many events such as those which gladdened our hearts, mine and yours, during the corresponding period of last year. , ' It is said that Mr. Weedrop and the tliree young F.tirlialls are going to arrange somo delightful cinderellas shortly, and I. feel sure in their hands the arrangements will be perfect. You are sure to be amongst the guests. There havo boen so few of these meet ings, at least not near so many as there should have been, since our dear ox-Mayor migrated. ? The - idea . of a Mayor's Ball, clonclierknow, was always pleasing, but then that was all we had — the idea. ' Our civic functionaries nro howwid slow ; they seem to do nothing lately but wrangle over the clearing of this street and that street, and one wasted the time of a recent Council meeting in making a vigorous complaint as...

A Craze to give Evidence. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 25 April 1891

A Crase to give Evidence The Parliamentary Standing Com mittee on Public Works, like other somewhat similar Iwdies, are troubled to some extent by volunteer witnesses who imagine that they can infallibly guide the committee in respect of the necessity for some public work or other, but who, when examined, have no information of iiny value to impart. The Public Works Committee hare of late Inul two or three samples of this description, of witnesses, nnd they — the committee, not the witnesses — are getting tired. After sovnral offers of evidence were read :it yesterday's meeting of the committee, Mr. Garrad said thnt the.y seemed to be besieged with witnesses. The. only desire of some of these witnnsses appeared to be to advertise themselves, for their evidence proved to be quite worthless. They occasionally com pletely broke down, and tho informa tion they provided was not worth the time taken in writing to them. STRUCK DOWN JN PUS-MAH. Beethoven composed music he was ton rleaf to hear, and the fastest steam craft in the world me built (both hull and machinery) by an American who haE been perfectly blind for many years. Never theless the one would have been the better for his hearing and the otlior for his eight. A soldier may be a model of patriotism «nd courage, but of what use is he in an army if he cannot carry a musket? Allow us to illustrate the point by a short story, Mr. John llodson was born at Warboye, in Huntingdonshire, When he was twenty-five years old ho took work as a iibvvj under the great railway con tractors, Mosshi, I/ucbb, Aird, Sons, and Co., of Westminster, and remained under them sevnn years. He then enlisted in fler Majesty's 51st Regiment and went with it to India in 1883. He assisted in the Burmah Expedition in 18.45-6, and was at Mandalay whun King Theebaw surrendered. With this explanation we will aow Jet Mr, Jlodson tell his own tale. He says;— r After zeaching S...

Interest in these contests hns not been so keen of late as formerly, but nevertheless tho raco hi.' ween M'Lean and Stanbury attracted a good deal of attention, and there was considerably more than the chaiupioiiHhip honor and the vnliie of the stake (£400) to bo rowed for. Tliero was a fair amount of betting on tho race, al though fur a day or two prior to it and up to tlio start the odds were against Staubury, who was understood to be suffering from a cold, and moreover had to row in a borrowed boat, which it was thought would not suit him 30 well as could bo deBired. BEACH'S OPINIONS ON THE RACE. ' I had confidence iii Stanbury,' said Kx-chauipion Beach, in tho course of a conversation with our _ representative after the race, *'a.nd I therefore took the odds about him. Yes ; he won it easily cutiuirh. It. seemed to mo that after the iirat half-mile ho eased up, and he dropped two strokes soon after the start. Ho rowed under disadvantages, but was good enough in spit« of them. Tin had a cold, and ho used .1 boat borrowed from an amateur ; but I always said he was good enough from the time lie beat O'Connor, and I was glad to see him win. Tho first mile knocked M'Le.in out.' ' How- do you think that the wind ?iffi-cl-ed the race?' — 'I think that the htfnd wind was in Stanbury's favor, for ho is tho stronger man.'
