ELECTION MEETINGS. MEETING OF MR. YOUNGS FRIENDS. [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 4 December 1860

ELECTION MEETINGS.   MEETING OF MR. YOUNG'S FRIENDS. On Friday evening, 30th November, a public meeting was held at the Edinburgh Hotel, for the   purpose of nominating Mr. Young as a candidate to represent the district of Eden in the forthcoming Parliament. About forty persons were in the room, and a great number outside. Mr. DENIEHY was voted to the chair, and after explaining the object of the meeting, called on any gentleman who had a resolution to propose, to come forward and do so. Dr. Young begged to move the first resolution— "Resolved—That an opposition candidate is   highly desirable for this district." (Cheers.) He would say that an opposition candidate was   necessary, if indeed, Mr. Egan intended coming forward at all. We had no proof of his doing so beyond an address embodying no principles. Mr. Egan had treated the people here with contempt by not coming forward and explaining what were his principles....

MEETING AT SHAMROCK HOTEL. [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 4 December 1860

MEETING AT THE SHAMROCK HOTEL.   A meeting of the supporters of Daniel Egan, Esq.,   was held at the Shamrock Hotel, on Saturday   evening, 1st inst.     Dr. KING was voted to the chair and stated, that he would have been better pleased if a     resident of the town had been elected as Chairman, but as they had conferred the honour on him, he     would endeavour to give every one a fair and   impartial hearing. (Hear, hear.)     Mr. BLOW moved, and Mr. SOLOMON seconded, that Mr. Everett act as secretary to the meeting. Carried.   Mr. SOLOMON said, that he had hitherto refrained from moving in electioneering matters on this     occasion; but he would say that Mr. Egan as a     member had discharged his duties honestly and   uprightly, and it was impossib...

MINING INTELLIGENCE. KIANDRA. November 26. [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 4 December 1860

MINING INTELLIGENCE. KIANDRA. [FROM THE SPECIAL COMMISSIONER OF THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD.]   November 26. The Escort leaves to-day with 1358 ozs. 15dwts. 12 grs. The excitement to-day with respect to the   Crackenback Creek is considerable, a number of   men leaving. I have to-day seen two accounts from diggers to their mates. One describes the place,   and says that gold is being obtained in payable quantities, but that the extent of ground is very limited. The other is a very glowing account—that   it will be a far richer field than Kiandra, and ad- vising the party to sell the claim they are now   working, and to hasten there. Many good claims here are offering a mere nominal price, so eager   are a number of men to leave. The weather here is still very unsettled, the river being again flooded. Kiandra seems to be particularly unfortunate, for no sooner are arrangements made for two extra ...

SYDNEY NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 4 December 1860

SYDNEY NEWS. The following is the weekly summary from the Sydney Morning Herald of the 1st. inst. :— The coming elections still monopolise public attention. Mr. Cowper is at length fairly in the field for East Sydney. He has resigned his seat in the Upper House. His address, published this morning, merely appeals to his past career as evidenciary of his fitness for a seat in the Assembly; but it reminds the electors that, as he is the only member of the present Cabinet before them, they will have by their votes, not only to mark their   opinion of himself but of the Ministerial policy in general.   For some of the constituencies there are several candidates in the field; but for others it is found candidates are still wanting, and apparently rather   hard to get. Doubtless, however, they will be found everywhere ere nomination day comes.   Miss Roberstson, the daughter of Mr. J. B. R.   Robertson, of Moor Park, has had...

VICTORIAN NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 4 December 1860

VICTORIAN NEWS.   The new Ministry is constituted as given in our   last issue. The oaths have been administered to the members, and they have taken their seats at   the Executive Council table accordingly.   The following letter addressed by Captain Pasley to Captain Bancroft, in reference ot the New     Zealand war, was published in the columns of the     Argus:—       "Fairlie House, South Yarra, 20th Nov.     "My dear Bancroft,—Although, as you are   aware, I was unable, in consequence of my wound,     to be present at the engagement which took place at   Mahoetahi on the 6th inst., I heard such full   accounts of it immediately afterwards from officers   who were present, that I have no difficulty in   replying to your que...

DANIEL EGAN [?]Q, FOR EDEN. [Newspaper Article] — Twofold Bay and Maneroo Observer — 4 December 1860

DANIEL EGAN, ESQ., FOR EDEN.     Last night a public meeting was held at the Court-house for the purpose of hearing the political principles of Daniel Egan, Esq. Mr. SILK was voted to the chair, who briefly explained the object of the meeting. Mr. EGAN then [...] loud and continued cheering. It afforded him, he said, great pleasure to meet the electors of Eden after such a long absence. He found that a meeting had already been held here in reference to political matters, and he was glad to see the people alive to their [...]. He agreed with their movement in every respect. They had a perfect right to elect any member they thought proper; but there were things that should not be trifled with. They should remember that whoever they returned as their representative, he was entrusted with subjects of the greatest import- ance. Not only free selection before survey, but matters of life, liberty, and property, that would affect themselves and their children herea...
