A VALUABLE HINT. Those who get on in the world are those who never fail to take a valuable hint when it comes their way. Here is a hint which may prove of great value to you. Mrs. T. Elliott, Mines-road, Korum burra, says:-"For years I suffered from backache and otlier distressing symptoms of kidney trouble, such- as disordered secretions, dizzy attacks, ;«&nd a dull, tired l'eeling that I could not shake off. I tried all sorts of kid . ney remedies in the hope of getting well again," but until I got Doan's Back: ache Kidney Pills nothing did me any good. These pills were one day brought under my notice as a' cure for disordered kidneys, so I bought some. . The first couple of bottles gave me relief, and eight bottles made a com plete cure. Before I took Doan's Backache Kidney Pills my sufferings were awful, and I used to feel some times too ill to move, but I am in splendid health now, and have been every since my cure was effected six years ago. Doan's Backache Kidney Pill...

[?]lett Express. PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY. TELEPHONE NO. 8. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1915. DESIRED DETERMINATION. [Newspaper Article] — Powlett Express and Victorian State Coalfields Advertiser — 12 February 1915

iloltrlett (Espwss. PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY. TELEPHONE NO. 8. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1915 DESIRED DETERMINATION. THE Minister for Mines has recom mended that the application of the Powlett-North Woolamai Colliery for an advance of £5000 be granted for the development of its mine. By the prompt adherance to this declaration, the Government is giving a well-deserv 1 impetus to an important industry in this district and bestowing an inestim able benefit upon the whole of Australia. Fiscal controversialists may occasionally complain about some Victorian industries being unnecessarily " coddled But this charge cannot be truly laid against the coal industry, which is one of the country's natural resources, and comes correctly under the heading of primary industries. Coal is plentiful in this district, and only awaits to be brought into use by the aid and ingenuity of man. The patriot and the charlatan are on an equal footing when advocating that the local bounties of nature be availed of. Th...

SHOP ASSISTANTS' UNION. (TO THE EDITOR "POWLETT EXPRESS"). [Newspaper Article] — Powlett Express and Victorian State Coalfields Advertiser — 12 February 1915

SHOP ASSISTANTS' UNION. "(TO THE EDITOR "POWLETT EXPRESS"^. Sir, - At the ordinary fortnightly meeting, held at the Friendly Societies' hall on Thursday last, it was resolved to issue a " white list", bearing the names of the shops employing union labour, and the names of unionists in these shops. Owing to the fact that a number of employees still fail to see the good work that this small union has done for them, it was decided to ask the A. C.M. A. for solid support in the white list movement. The present Wages' Board is nothing to be proud of, but under the conditions it was got and considering the local branch \tfas the only union represented qn fh|e board, it reflects great credit on tfte local branch of the Shop Assistants' Union. This Union sent a represents tive to tfye board, and on pot que of the motions (which were all for better conditions and increase of wages) could he get a seconder, although there were two others supposed to be repre senting the employees (but not uni...

BELGIAN POMOLOGISTS. [Newspaper Article] — Powlett Express and Victorian State Coalfields Advertiser — 12 February 1915

BELGIAN POfViOLOGISTS. AVe'arc largely indebted to BoJguini ['or many of our finest fruits, more especially pears. If we glance down a Melbourne catalogue we find a goodly number of names which indicate their origin. Tor hundreds of years the Belgians have been noted for their hor ticulture, especially in the branch of pomology, and the gardens of the world have been enriched by the vari eties of fruits raised in brave little Belguim. The father of pomology in Belguim is generally reckoned to be Abbe Har denpoint., who was born at Mons in 1755, and received his education at the University of Louvain. His most fam ous seedlings were pears Glou Mor ceaus and Beurre Iiance. Both of these are widely cultivated. Tassa Colmar is another fine pear when grown 011 warm soil. In 1787 M. Capiaumont, a chemist at Mons, raised from a seed of the Oalebasse pear the variety which still bears his name. The fertility and hardiness of this fruit have led to its cultivation in many countries, and it i...
