This was fortunate for we were thus saved a disappointment. Wo found that, a considerable amount of work bad beuii done by the two prospectors, tlieir principal shaft, iu which the reef is being followed, is about 15 feet down, and there is plenty of stone, but, the formation appears i-ather unsettled as yet. A number of selected stones were shnvvn hnt we failed to find any gold, not having oar inagnifijr with us. We were rold however that good results wei\s obtainable by doljying. BUTTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 15 June 1894

BUTTS. The period of ?butts* seems to have passed away. The late Lord ilotwhton, the late Mr. Abraham Haywaxd, the late Mr, Urom- j ley-Davenport, and most of the other oele .farated conversationalists of * generation ago never shone at their best but when their &mU liaz butt was present. Indeed, two or' three of the most . roduonable men . and women of thattime became so merely beoausff wherever, snyof these wits went they .were invited, also in otder to provide the right target for ^iem to aim their shafts at. Conversation in Londan Sooiety and at the West-end dubs is tmdoubtodly more intcSligent now than'lt ' was them, though equally unquestionable is it ttiat it is never so brilliant; 'lie jjrave fault of our present conversation is the per petualjreferenoe tolnudnass end to finnndftl matters.— Gniphio.

POSING. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 15 June 1894

POSING. Too many- writers hasten to assume the statue in their own lifetime, and to oampoae their public features to a non -human frig idity.- But the premature pedestal does not always prove sustaining, forto be non-human is not to be immortal ; it is your Martin Tap-' pets and your University pngB who never de ecend to a jest* not your Shakespeares and Hemes. ' Let us be serious, here oomes a fool!' exclaimed a divine in danger of being caugh&disporting himself boyishly 'Let us be serious, here comes a critio 1* the modem author is tempted to exdair. For the stock critic, with that suburban insight of his, can-, not understand that a serious man may bis humorous, still less that a humorous man is. alwayB serious. Literature has tiughtthe critic that lesson ad nauseam, but he never requires the lesson, only the nauaea. -Israel Zaagwffl.

DODO. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 15 June 1894

DODO. The Dodo is the name of an extinct genus of birds (Didns), assigned to the order Oolum bae, and constituting a new family, Dididae. One species (D. ineptus) was abundant in the Mauritius on its discovery in 1598, and it is from its' bones, which have been found in the fiuviotile detritus of that island, as well as from old pictures and descriptions that our knowledge of the animal is derived. It .waB a maswve, olrnqsy bird, larger than a swan, covered with down instead of feathers, with short, extremely strong legs, and wings and tail so short as to ho useless for flight. Its extinction was due to its organization not be ing adapted to the new conditions whioh ool onisation and cultivation ^ introduced. . O flier igecjesexisted in Rodriguez, and possibly in

LOTTERIES. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 15 June 1894

LOTTERIES. Nearly a century has jtassed sinoe we put down those State lotteries which offerei an Outlet for the gambling passions of the mul titude, yet to -day .gambling is far more widely spread in England than it was in the days of the State lotteries. Turf gambling is the curse of no Bmall proportion of the people of tills oountry ; and the misery which infiiots, not only upon xnese wno plunge into tus so called pleasure, but upon thousands of inno oent people, is hardly to be guessed at. Surely our statesmen, our philanthropists, our re* Ugious leaders, night do something to eheck this monotrous national scourge. Here is a work in whiohmen of all parties might unite, t isa work in which they will have to unite before long, if this community of ours is not to become utterly demoralised. — Speaker .

ORIGINALITY. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 15 June 1894

ORIGINALITY. Each man is different from his fellows, just as are the leaves of a tree, and, at best, a perfect simulation can be bnt .an imperfect substitution. Do not try to wrest from the future the birth-right of some other by the trick of Esau's tauy hands. The voice will .betray-, though the touch may deoeive. There fore, I ask you to weigh well the advantages which may present themselves to you before you try to part with, to minimise, or to fore go in any way your own individuality. Study it without being egotistic, and, understand \ing the weak places, shun their temptations land try to protect yourself by added strength. Knowing yourself, you may learn to know |)tlerB, and, in process of time, you will both consciously and unconsciously learn those abiding principles of human - nature anl of human onaracter which add to the knowledge and the progress of the world.— Henry Irving.

SOUL. The CalviniBts called the eye within us the Inspiration of the' Almighty. Aristotle could see that it was not of earth, or any creature of . space or time. .What the thing is whiph we oall, ourselves we know not. 'It may be tru,e'— I for ono care not if it be -that ;the descent'^ our mortal bodies may be tracsd -^ through «n - ascending series to some glutinous jeuy formed on the rooks of the primeval ocean. It is nothing to me how the Maker of me has been pleased to oosstruct the organised substanoe which I call my body. It is mine, but' it is not me.
