[?]OR THE FARMER, FARMYARD MANURE. [Newspaper Article] — Gordon, Egerton and Ballan Advertiser — 16 January 1914

«©B THE FARMER, FARMYARD MANURE. Farmyard manuro consists ot tho solid and liquid excrements of anl* mala and tho litter with which those subBtancoB aro mixed and nbBorbed. Its value for fertilising purposes do pendu to a great extent upon the way ; in which it la handled in the* dung | stead. 1b this respect (says a- writer In an English farm journal) its man | agement too often loaves much to bo desired, and, taking tho country all through, enormous quantities of valu able plant nourishment aro lost. Tho atmosphere is the chiof agent which produces tho decomposition of tho ammonia in tho manuro and causos it to escape, and therefore tho air must bo shut out of tho manure heap ais much as possible. WHY IMPORT CITRUS FRUIT? [Newspaper Article] — Gordon, Egerton and Ballan Advertiser — 16 January 1914

I WH.Y IMPORT CITRUS PR^IIT? Why, asks an expert, do wo import citrus fruit from Italy? Wo nave conditions Hero favorable to the growing of ilrst class fruit. Wo can produce citrus fruit hero equal to what wo receivo from Italy, if pro per cultural methods are practised. The soil is here, and tho climatic condition. Tho Italian fruit has a( thin skin, the correct flavor, and its keeping quality is world-renowned. Yet some of our locally-produced orau ges will compare favorably with theirs, but to oust tho imported ar ticles growers should endeavor to produce more of this class. The thin-1 bkiunud varieties arc just as easily grown as the inferior types, and, as far as flavor is concerned, many of our up-to-dato growers produce fruit every hit as good as that imported— bettor in fact, but the drawback is that wo do not get enough, nor does it always combine with tho commer cially-essential thin skin.

PIGS FOR BACON. [Newspaper Article] — Gordon, Egerton and Ballan Advertiser — 16 January 1914

PIGS FOR BACON. • Certain modifications in tho zneth-, ods of killing and preparing piga for bacon have been necessary in recent years to meet the demands of the consumer and curer. Among these bus been tho movement in favor of lees fat and more lean, what Is pre ferred now being a tasty, mild-flavor cU, somewhat lean bacon, which is iinely streaked with fat and of firm texture. It is occasionally found in dealing with carcases for either pork or ba con that there exists an abnormal condition in the texture of fibre of tne llesh. It is soft, yieldB to pres sure, is flabby, and possesses an un natural greasiness. This class of flesh invariably cures badly, and pro duces inferior bacon. Observation has taught that it is mainly duo to the various classes of food being used in improper proportions. Further experience has shown that this influence is more pronounced dur ing winter. Low temperatures exert a change upon tho nature of the body fat. Animals exposed to cold are prone to produ...

COLIC DRENCH FOR HORSES. [Newspaper Article] — Gordon, Egerton and Ballan Advertiser — 16 January 1914

COLIC DRENCH FOR HORSES. Almost every veterinary surgeon has his own special formula (or colic drench, and thus the contents of the hottle varies according to the ideas of the prescriber, and, to some extent at least, according to what he conceives to be the requirements of the case. If you want a formula for a colic drink to keep by you for use In emergencies, the following will be suitable:—Tinc ture of opium, 1 ounce; oil of turpen tine, 2 ounces; Unseed oil, to 1 pint. Give this as it is, followed by a little warm gruel. Walk the horse about to prevent his rolling, rub the belly with a wisp, and, if necessary, re peat the drench in two hours, but not more than two doses should be given. Understand that It is not claimed that this recipe is better than any other. It may not even bo the most suitable under all circumstances, but it is in expensive, easily procured, will keep good for any length of time if properly corked and sealed, and often cuts short an attack in its initial st...

....SUNBEAMS.... [Newspaper Article] — Gordon, Egerton and Ballan Advertiser — 23 January 1914

....SUNBEAMS.... Some men belong to clubs, and others soem to think the clubs be long to them. There is no effect without a causeexcoptwheuawoinan ohangea her mind. No matter how great your troubles are, there1 are other fellows who have some that will make yours look like orphans too late at a picnic. The only man who can truthfully nay his wife is an angel ib the widower. A girl may allow her mother to pick out a husband for her, but she asserts herself when it comes to selecting a tronsseaa. Think twice before you speak— then speak about something else. Some are born lazy, soma achieve | lnziness, and some have it thrust | upon them.
