CHARGE OF AN UNNATURAL OFFENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 30 November 1877

CHARGE OF AN UNNATURAL OF- FENCE. Our Argus Stawell correspondent reports that on Saturday Mr. D. Constable, a wealthy but somewhat eccentric person residing at Stawell, was brought in custody to the po- lice court charged with having committed a rape upon a young girl named Reamington, employed by him as a domestic servant.   The investigation was held privately, but from what has transpired appears that the prosecutrix had received certain advances, and submitted to conduct on the part of the accused of a highly indelicate character. On the occasion of the alleged offence the de- fendant had thrown her down in his bedroom. The act was observed through the window by one of the other female servants, of whom there were three in the house, upon which the girl screamned lustily and was released by a numberof-persons rushing into the room to her assistance. The medical testi morny does not, it is alleged, support the allegation of the prosecutrix. The miagis- trates, howeve...

FENCING IN OF ROADS. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 30 November 1877

FENCING TN-OF ROADS. Many of our- readers will remember with what a howl of indignation the information was received throughout the length and breadth of the land, that the pastoral tenants of the Crown, commonly kno vn as squatters, and more often designated by the extreme liberal party as those rapacious lords of the roil; or by other epithets more forcible than polite, had actually fenced in and were occupying for pastoral pur purposes hundreds of thousands of acres of Crown lands which had been re served for public roads, and for which they were paying no rent, and were in a measure robbing the people of their rights. We have seen popular orators on more than one platform stamping and dancing with frenzy, pouring forth language marked with vehemenice of utterance and volubility .of words, rather than with a calm deliberation and well considered knowledge of the subject, all having a tendency to appeal to the worst passions of mankind-and having for it. end the obtaining the symp...
