A SCENE FROM "NICHOLAS NICKLERY." [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 12 October 1839

A SCENE FROM "NICHOLAS NICKLEBY." The amiable Mrs. Mantalini finding that her husband had become the prodigal in his expendi- ture, determind to put him on "short allowance." With the intention of putting this resolution into operation she pays a visit to old Ralph Nickleby, at   whose office she finds her husband at the time she calls. After some conversation with Ralph res- pecting Mr. Mantilini's extravagance, to which   her husband listened very attentively, Mrs. Man-   talini says—   "I have therefore made up my mind to allowance him." "To do what, my joy?" inquired Mr. Mantali- ni, who did not seem to have caught the words.   "To put him," said Madame Mantalini, looking at Ralph, and prudently abstaining from the slightest glance at her husband, lest his many graces should induce her to falter in her resolu- tion, "to put him upon a fixed allowance; and I say that if he has a hundred and twenty pounds- &n...

The South Australian Register. ADELAIDE: Saturday, OCTOBER 14, 1839. DEATH OF COLONEL LIGHT. [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 12 October 1839

The South Australian Register. ADELAIDE: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1839. DEATH OF COLONEL LIGHT. It is with feelings of deep sorrow that we announce the death of Colonel LIGHT the first Surveyor-general of South Australia. An   asthmatic affection, we believe, to which Co- lonel Light had for several years been subject, assumed some months ago a character which   his medical advisers considered fatal - his bodily health, weakened by many wounds and the effects of former hard service in the Peninsula, gradually decayed, and Death finally released     him from mortal suffering on Saturday last.   An account of the public honors paid to his   remains by the Governor and the colonists will   be found below.     A moment like the present is, perhaps, the   fitting season to speak of the character of the departed: and we should ill discharge our   duty if we hesitated to repeat here our humble testimony...
