SATISFACTORY SECURITY. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 22 December 1913

? ♦ ? SATISFACTORY SECURITY. The failure of the British and Con tinental money lenders to rush Aus tralian loan seekers has created an un easy feeling in some quarters that our securities are not considered satisfactory. They forget that the present money stringency is universal, and more so than it has been for some considerable time. At all events, reassurance on the point of security was offered by Sir Hildred Carlile at the luncheon given by the Syd ney Chamber of Commerce, in honor of the British parliamentarians. He was impressed with what he had seen, he said, that those who had lent money to Aus tralia had an investment that was abso lutely sound. It would be good also to tell those who had not invested of the abundantly-safe thing it would be. They could launch out with manifest satisfac tion and confidence.

A SPORTING COUNCIL. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 22 December 1913

A SPORTING COUNCIL. Says 'The Wag' : — Aldermen of Hay Municipality arc evidently in the habit of getting 'private information from the stable.' A committee of the Council recently had to prepare a special report upon Hehtinsr, but the picnic races happened along at the same time, ln htead of wasting time on their official duties the member preferred to spend it trying their luck with the 'Neddies.' Possibly their 'dead certs'' were just as dead as those floating about before the Mel bourne Cup. Somebody had to suffer anyhow, and possibly the Hay ratepayers lost most, at all events in the matter of time, on this occasion..

IN QUEENSLAND. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 22 December 1913

IN QUEENSLAND. The sooner Minister Appel amends the Act to compel the employment of qualified engineers the better for ratepayers of Beaudesert at all events. The Council, desiring a drainage scheme, called in a consulting engineer, but it was then discovered that before any such scheme could be considered the streets would have to be reformed and gravelled. So the consulting engineer lias now to prepare a .'?cheme of street formation. There are other districts in a worse condition than Beaudesert, and all because of the failure of parish-pump Ministers of the past to compel the employment of engineers. City Engineer Thompson has given Toowoomba Council (Q.) the greatest mental shaking up it ever had in its life. Drowsy meetings have been turned into real live gatherings by this man of ideas. He is imparting to the civic fathers, by the suggestion of new and profitable schemes how far they really are behind the times, and the aldermen appear to relish the new order of things. The la...

HEALTH OF THE PEOPLE. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 22 December 1913

HEALTH OF THE PEOPLE. A scheme for the reorganisation of the Health Department of the Melbourne City Council should be more than casually noticed by Sydney. It is rea lised in Melbourne that necessity exists for the in crease of the staff, and that in ».he light of modern sanitation, the highest standard oi efficiency should be attained by the staff. It was thought that only persons holding the certificate of the London Sani tary Institute should in future be qualified ior ap pointment as sanitary inspectors. The committee hold that the great need for fre quent and systematic inspection of the entire area of the city in regard to infectious diseases (includ ing consumption), factories, noxious trades, the ad ministration of the Pure Foods Act, public build ings, infant life protection (including pure milk supply), and rat destruction, necessitates the ap pointment of two additional assistant sanitary in spectors, and the filling of a vacant position, which has been deferred pending ...

Strength of Cranes A DEPARTMENTAL DICTUM. Causes Consternation. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 22 December 1913

Strength of Cranes A DEPARTMENTAL DICTUM. Causes Consternation. The majority of those who attended the last monthly meeting of the Master Builders' Assoeia-. tion were armed with ominous-looking circulars. They bore the signature of the Engineer-in-Charge, Scaffolding-ami Lifts, and related to the strength of cranes, and the means officially determined upon of testing- it. The oeculiar ooint was that the Associa tion was not in official possession of a copy, and various members seemed to have been, likewise overlooked. However, everybody was cognisant of the contents, and eager to discuss the question. To say that the circular caused consternation is to put it mildly. Members spoke their minds freely, and one or two, who seemed to be in better posses sion of the facts, since they had experienced the pressure of the new dictum, were convinced that if it were directly applied as set out, every crane in Sydney would be condemned. After the dis closures the meeting did well to refer the...

L.G. Engineer J. F. Cleeland has accepted an offer from Kerang (V.i Council (without private practice), at a salary of £-100 per annum. This is the best bit of news from Victoria for a long time. THE TOWN PLANNING ASSOCIATION. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 29 December 1913

THE TOWN PLANNING ASSOCIATION. The keen interest being taken in town planning the world over compels our greater attention to a question which is charged with wonderful possibilities for this country of 'magnificent distances.' As our laws and the inclinations of our people at present go, Australian settle ments are developing into towns, and towns assuming the form of cities in hap hazard fashion, without any guiding hand save that expressed in the form of com mon-sense among the authorities. But that is not sufficient. Where there is no recognised standard, no aesthetic or prac tical ideal, uniformity of action toward an accepted objective is impossible. The re medy for this national evil is a Town Planning Association such as exists in other progressive countries. The objects of this Association are: To advocate proper planning of Australian Cities and Towns; Modern Building legis lation ; Efficient Municipal Government ; Up-to-date Water, Sewerage and Lighting Services ; to watc...

TOWN PLANNING A MESSAGE TO HIS FELLOW CITIZENS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 29 December 1913

TOWN PLANNING MR. JOHN SULMAN, F.R.I.B.A., Vice President of The Town Planning Association of N.S.W. A MESSAGE TO HIS FELLOW CITIZENS. For a century past the most advanced nations have largely become town dwellers. This is a necessity of the age, but it is not a necessity that they should thereby generate the dirt, disease, ugliness and bad conditions of life seen in our slums. These are, the results of ignorance care lessness and callous indifference to the well being of our fellows. All the civilised world over, people are lecturing uicii in bm.ii uidiLCis tiicy me their 'brother's keeper,' and that what is good for the few is good for all. The Town Planning Association of N. S. Wales aims at remedying the grievous defects which have grown up unchecked in our midst, and providing for the future growth of our towns in an orderly, sane, economic, healthful and beautiful manner. I appeal, therefore, to every citizen, without distinction of sex, class or creed, to join in this good wo...
