CORRESPONDENCE. THE HOTEL QUESTION. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 20 July 1895

C OR R ESPONDENC-E. THE HOTEL QUESTION. TO THE EDITOtt. Sir.—-My attention has been called to a lengthy effusion signed by "W. Corly Butler," making known to the public generally that he does not wish for a hotel in Bemnark and therefore such a place should not be allowed. His first argument is, donbtless, most conclusive—if anyone could under stand it, wherein he states that it is a "fallacy of pretension" I should, doubtless quite agree with him if I could understand what he meant by the expression, which at any rate has the merit of novelty , and speaks well for the reverend gentleman's ability for coining words hitherto absent from English dictionaries. I do not think our teetotallers will pride themselves on their Renmark advocate's letter, which is a compound of bare asser tions, a mere parody, and is very far from assisting the cause he has in view. It is a well-known fact that there is far leas drunkenness in a township with a well conducted hotel, under the careful supervis...

APRICOT CULTURE. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 20 July 1895

v APRICOT CULTURE. A meeting , of, ;,the.. Pomological Society of California wais held on May 2nd" and 3rd last/ and' V ritimber of very ; interesting papers on iilatters relating to fruitgrowing were read. Among others, the Rural Californian reports the following , on apricot culture, by Mr. Henry Johnson of San Pasquel:— .. Apricot culture has extended over a large portion of Southern California. The: localities best adapted to its cultivation, however, are the foothills and higher portions of the interior valleys, with a warm and even tem perature. Low, wet and cold localities should never be selected for apricots, for there the crop will irregular and uncertain. On such places, too, the trees are frequently infested with scale. In planting an apricot orchard, the time of setting out the trees is of very great importance, in order to insure success. It is generally well understood that the trees should be planted before the buds begin to swell in spring; but it is of equal import...

FRUIT TREE PESTS [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 20 July 1895

FRUIT, TREE PESTS The codHni 'moth: inspector (Mr. George Quinn) in a short' report 'to the Biireaiiof. Agriculture on Wednes day week -with respect to his month's work said i—'111 have been inspecting gardens and orchards in the districts of Glen Osmond, Eastwood, Park side' Fullarton,' "Maiveraj-■ and Unjev., Most of the gardens are smallj and where pears or apples are grown they are affected more or less with codlin moth larva. The majority of. the owners seem glad to receive any instructions which tend to .improve their methods of treating the trees. Every opportunity is taken of imparting information oil the pruning of vines or trees, on the best sorts for planting purposes, &c. These districts seem eminently suited for the cultivation of citrus fruits. In only a few instances was the destructive orange round or red scale found,, either on trees which have l>een; well attended , or those which have been neglected. ; This scale is not nearly so ' generally distributed...

SHARP PRACTICE. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 20 July 1895

SHARP PRACTICE. TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—rSome months ago our local poundkeeper wrote a letter to your paper, in which he posed as a bene factor to the people of Renmark and wished it understood that he did not keep the pound for the profit derived from it. But I think, sir, the follow ing case will put the matter in a. somewhat different light. On Sunday lgst a storekeeper had three horses impounded and on hear ing of the fact sent a man to release them. The man went to the pound, saw the horses and noticed that they had not been fed, he then went towards the poundkeeper's house, met him and told him he wished to release the horses, the poundkeeper said, "You must go to the house . and sign for them," He did so and hurried back just in time to see the. horses being fed, for which an additional charge of nine Shillings (3/- per horse) rwas made. ;; Now, sir, this may be law,, but it most certainly is not just or fair. It is quite bad enough to have to pay 3/-for a handful or so of chaff ...

The Pioneer. SATURDAY, JULY 20, 1895. THE CROW NUISANCE. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 20 July 1895

SATURDAY, JULY 20, 1895. THE CROW , NUISANCE Last week in a short paragraph we mentioned that crows were becom ing a great nuisance throughout the settle ment. The importance of some general effective measures to destroy these "satanic birds" being taken by ithe. settlers is so apparent as to demand no apology for this article. To delay taking steps to lessen the number of these fruit pests means to enhance the difficulty. There are so many now throughout the settlement that next season the destruction of a considerable portion of the fruit crop seems inevitable unless something is done promptly and effectively. The breeding season is just coming "on for these birds and there could not be a better time to make some impression on them, and kill off as many as pos sible and scare away the survivors. The recommendations ,we gave last week as to the simultaneous laying of poison on the fences should be carried out without delay, and a day should be set apart once a fortnight, or once a ...

CORRESPONDENCE. FOULING THE CHANNELS. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 27 July 1895

GORRESPONDENC E. FOULING THE CHANNELS. TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—I think it is time some notice was taken of the total disregard by some Benmark people of the By-Laws of Benmark Irrigation Trnst No. 1, especially the one rendering any per son who allows animals to stray on the banks of the channels liable to a penalty not exceeding £50. Horses are constantly to be seen on the channels, and what is very much worse indeed, I have discovered that a drove of pigs lives altogether- < n the Bal Bal Channel. Now all the water for irrigation throughout the settle ment is pumped from the Reservoir, and many settlers have not facilities for catching rain water and are there fore obliged to use channel water for domiestic purposes. As the Bal; Bal Channel supplies the Reservoir and this is nothing but a pigstye now, these unfortunate settlers are drinking diluted hogs' bath. I do not mind drinking affcetr. a healthy horse, but it is too disgusting to think that I may have beep imbibing wa...

VINE PRUNING. PROFESSOR PERKINS' NEW BOOK. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 27 July 1895

VINE PRUNING. PROFESSOR PERKINS' NEW BOOK. Vine-Pruning, its Theory and Prac- j tice, by Professor A. J. Perkins, Go vernment Vifciculturist of South Aus tralia, is the title of a useful little book we have just received. We can recommend this work to the notice of pur vignerons, as it deals exhaustively with tlbe subject and should prove of much value. The book is written in such a manner that a thorough grasp of the ideas the author wishes to con vey to his readers is readily obtained,, technical and scientific terms being lucidly explained, so that even the uneducated will find but little diffi culty in understanding the various ' points. The chapters devoted to general theoretical principles on .which the practice of vine^pruning is based, and the one on jthe Gooseberry Bush system of pruning, will well ^ajr the carefuj| study of the raisin (grower.
