I am directed by the Minister of Public Works to request that your council will in all cases where new appointments are being made give preference to returned soldiers who are qualified to fill such vacancies. To have an opportunity of hearing about the brave boys at the front is a privilege that is greatly valued by the general public. To-morrow (Sunday) afternoon, in the Public Hall, such an &nbsp; opportunity will be afforded. The Acting Chaplain-General Colonel Nye &nbsp; of the Methodist Conference will tell the story of his experiences with the lads. The rank won by the speaker at the front speaks of the high value set upon his work by the authorities, and there should be a crowded house to hear him.

Red Cross Workers. The committee of the local branch of the Red Cross Society have once more commenced operations and are making strenuous efforts to supply comforts or the soldiers. It is urgently requested that workers will come forward again as they did last year and assist the Society in their noble work. Material can be obtained from the hon. secretary (Mrs. T. M. Drew.) There is a great demand for shirts for the soldiers and it is hoped a ready response to this appeal will be forthcoming. &nbsp;
