Running **' Pilot.' Mr. Henry Frith, the author of hot ft few exciting short stories of hardy adventures and ''hair-breadth escapes, contributes to GasseWg Family Maga zine, a characteristic pa;ter, called 'Running 'Pilo^'-i-a dangerous duty in which an engine with trusty driver and Stoker is sent on when it has to clear the way, or see that the way is clear, for a specie train from the Far West:— 'Who is standing pilot, this evening?' said the superintendent, or 'boss,' as he was called. Farming in South Australia. [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 27 September 1878

Farming in South Australia. Few places in the vrorld can compare with South Australia in the extent of land under cultivation, and especially remarkable is the proportion which the area under tillage bears to tne popula tion, for we are but a handful of people in a great country, and the space at our disposal is indeed immense. The rapid growth of agriculture is the direct out come of the land legislation of the past few years, and that legislation the result of the determination of the people to hold more extended farms, as they found that the larger the farm the greater the profit, because tie erpense did not increase in the same ratio as the cultiva tion. One great cause of the demand or more land is the ease with which our farming operations can be conducted/ for most of those who take up new land are not by twining farmers, or those who have had experience in the work, but they are teamsters, miners, shepherds, clerks, and in fact there is no class of men in the colonies, who i...

Burra Hospital and the Mayor. [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 27 September 1878

Burra Hospital and the Mayor. O.dk attention has been drawn to an extiaordmary letter appearing in the columns of the Australian Star, signed ' Humanity1-,' and making charges of jartiality and uniairness against this ournaL Sad these not appeared the letter would nat have needed any notice it our hands, but we cannot allow im putations of the kind to pass unehal iengee as they, if substantiated, wouJd prove us utterly unworthy not only of the editorial position,, but of the respect of all honourable men. The assertions in the epistle are so remarkable that we will simply place them side by side with bhe facts of the case, and our friend the Star and the public generally will at once assess the writer at his true value. When the Mayor ' tried to explain ta the public through the medium of the local paper he find's, much to his annoyanca, that he cannot get his letters inserted, nor his version of the case made public through the medium of the Burra Heeord.' - Now for fact. Mr. Lipse...
