Treatment of Wimmera Land. (Abridged from "The Leader.") [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 11 February 1914

Treatment of Wimmera Land. (Abridged from " lbe Leader/'j Eleven years ago -Mr \V. G. Greenfield, son of .1 well-known farmer in the Gerang district, near Nhill, acquired 320 acres of land adjoining the farm on which he had been reared. Although a young man, he was thoroughly familiar with the best systems of Wimmera farming, and therefore felt no con cern as to the future of his new undertaking. Being of a very ob servant nature, he had carefully taken stock of the methods- by which the best farmers of the dis trict had achieved their higher re turns. These, as has for years been pointed out in the colomns of "The Leader," consisted of early fallow, its thorough cultivation, the grading of seed wheat, and the ap plication of & light dressing of superphosphate with the se<*d as it was being sown. Mr Greenwood noticed that one of the practices that invariably led to the heaviest crops was the thorough working up of the fallow. -He therefore started his career as a ...

SALVE OF SLEEP [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 11 February 1914

SALVE OF SLEEP Joy, Temperance, and Repose Slam the door on the doctor's nose. This old saying was quoted with ap proval by Professor William Stirling, of Manchester—described by Sir James Crichton Browne as "the mosl brilliant exponent of modern physio logy"—In a locturo at the Barnes Hall of the Royal Society of Medicine, Wlmpole streot, W., last evening (re ports tho "Daily News" of November 28). Muscular fatigue, said the Profes sor, gradually used up the chomlcal reserves upon which our movements depended, and, in addition, poisonous by-products were formed which often remained to clog the machine and to act as toxins. Severo bodily exercise, ho declared, was incompatible with full digestive activity. "After dinner rest awhile" was part of tho proverbial wisdom of Salerno. Mental fatigue gTeatly Im paired bodily activity, and physical or muscular dlsoase had a distinct effect * on brain activity. Tho too ardent but untrained Alplno climber, tho enthusiastic but unseao oned gymn...

By HENRY FARMER, Author of "The Money-Lender," "12a Quiltry Street," "Bondage," etc. (AH Rights Reserved.) CHAPTER VII. (Continued). Hilary would understand, would liavo been told why sho had not staved, why she -was not present at the crucial mo ment of his ordeal to flash him a mes sage of love and faitli -with her eyes. Ho would understand—but why, oh, God, why had fato ordered things so cruelly? * Sho moved again—hesitated. She was craving again for tho solitude of her own room. Yet her sejiso of tho fit ness and tho appropriateness of things was asserting itself. It had been brought home to her that specialised skill had saved her mother's life, and that Michael Thorno had provided it. A door opened, and as Beryl came out on the landing Queenio heard he* father's voice. Ho was saying some thing about Voile's, and a Hood of sen sitive color swept her face She real ised that lie was playing his old trick, making cadging appeals to Thorno for some benefit on her behalf. DEADLY FLANNELETTE [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 18 February 1914

DEADLY FLANNELETTE Infiammablo clothing as a causo of deaths by Are is exposed In a striking manner by statistics compiled by "Firo." The writer says:— "Whon tho fireguards clause was in corporated in the Children Act it was piously hoped that tho number of chil dren annually burned to death would bo reduced by half. So far as our records t go. the number of infantile mortalities has increased, for tho Act is practic ally a dead letter; few penalties are im posed in the comparatively tew in stances where proceedings have beeu taken. "For many years I suffered from frequent attacks of Indigestion, follow ed by pains in the chest, severe head iclies, sleeplessness, biliousness, con stipation and pains 'under the shoulder blades. I could retain little on my sto nach, and vomited frequently. I tried i variety of medicines with very little ?ood result. I happened to read one if Warner's Safe Cure pamphlets, and seeing in it how others had taken War ner's Safe Cure with beneficial re sults, I decided to try that medicine.
