The Osage Orange. HOW TO PLANT, CULTIVATE AND MAKE A HEDGE. [Newspaper Article] — The Mildura Cultivator — 16 June 1888

The Ostage Orange. 1OW To I'LANT. CULTIVATE. AND 31AKE A IIEDGE. ]1':S. CUETOS. The Osage orange (macurac coura? tite) is a delciduous tree--a native of Texas-and can he grown and culti vated advanltageously in any part of Victoria. The ground should be thoroughly pulverised by either plough ing or spading before tile seed is planted. The best way is to sprout the seed before planting, cas it is very slow to germinate when put into the ground without being sprouted, somae timles taking a. whole season to come up. To sprot lthe seed puti in it vessel and cover with warcm (not hot) water. Keep the vec;el in a warmcu place, and cchange the water once a day. Let the seed soak five or six clays, after which pour off the srw ter and cover tile vessel with a cloth. Keep in ia wanrl roolc and stir the ?ced occasionally. In about one week more they will begin to sprout, a;ti are ready for planting. A pound of sect (if properly mianaged) will prwIl.ce 5000 plants. The se?ed houlhl he solri ve...

FARM NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — The Mildura Cultivator — 16 June 1888

FARM NOTES. In the destruction of weeds use horse labour as much as posthile.as hand lalbour makes this wo.rk very costly. A tablespuooful of saltpetre to Igal of water is reiomentlllle I as a destructive of the cabbage worm. Wet clay or tmud will give relief froma wasp or bhee stings. antd none of the ilmodrn rentleies are any better. Many fences on the farm are perfectly useless. and merlely serve as blarlthors flr weeds and their propituagation. The lleistirtu Iriirlturi.t says that if there is nce error more apparent, than another it, is that of allowing too malty fowls to run midl root together. Potatoes which are dg ill clear weather nld thoroughly dried in the sun will keep in much better condition in the cellar than these put into hins without. being sundried. It is not more foolish to expect the soil to produce large crophs without the laIour of intelligentt cultivation than that a trader will give in return for a nsmall sut1s something worth many times more. TUNGAMAH EXPRESS: [Newspaper Article] — The Mildura Cultivator — 16 June 1888

TUNGAMAH EXPRESS :   The Mildrua Cultivator is naturally in-   teresting as being the authorised organ of Chaffey Bros.' settlement, and as giving an idea of life and prospects in the new colony. It is a highly creditable production. The matter is readable and interesting, and though perceptibly tinged with a quaint Yankee humour, brings to mind remini- scences of the genial former proprietor of the Numurkah Standard, Mr. N. B. M'Kay.

Mr Candlish Cross-examined. [Newspaper Article] — The Mildura Cultivator — 16 June 1888

Mr Candlish Cross-examined. One of the most hopeful of Mildura's settlers is Mr. John W. Candlish. He   knows a lot about fruitgrowing, and he   says the climate and soil are eminently adapted for the industry. He fell into the clutches of our reporter the other day and had to make his defence. "You intend to go largely into the nursery business—if the whole of your patch is to be used for that purpose?" "No, that would be more than I     could manage. I propose to have about 8 acres or so permanently planted out, and the remainder will be devoted to nursery purposes. I have 13½ acres here. The whole of it has been twice worked up with the steam cultivator." "You have had considerable experi-   ence in gardening matters I believe."     "Merely a lifetime. I was for many years gardener to the Countess of Aberdeen—the Earl being most of his time away. I was after- wards employed in the Liverpool...
