Slate SflrtmeL THURSDAY MORNING, NOV. 13. 1SSG. PUjyy.. 1 SS:? - THE GENERA I RESULT. A OXiQRIOUS TRIUMPH! We cannot longer forbear to give a jubilant shout over the decided victory which the national Democracy hare achieved in the election of their Presidential candidates. It Is a triumph of patriotism which must rejoice the heart of eTery one who values the future well being and perpetuity of our glorious Union; and no one should restrain that outburst of gratitude and joyfulnesa which such an event must inspire. The true men of the country trembled at the danger which a defeat of the Democracy in the recent political contest would have brought upon tha nation. If it had not resulted in an immediate disruption of the confederacy, it would hare produced an aliena tion of feeling and a sectional discord which would have eventually terminated in that ap prehended evil. But happily these fears have ended and the reign of peace, of harmony and of national prosperity will be again in au...

3Mt mmwl THURSDAY MORNING, NOV. 27, 1S56 Election of Mayor. The Black Republicans seem to etjoy highly the "victory" which they achieTed on Saturday in the election of Mayor. Whilst we cheerfully concede to them all the "crumbs of comfort" to bo derived from the result of that contest, we are not willing that tha facts in tha case should be misrepresented. The victory of our opponent is clearly traceable to two prominent and .distinct causes, which no one who is conversant with, the vote of the city can overlook, if he would. One is, tha neglect of the Democrats to poll their fall vote. Thi3 is shown by the result in the first and seventh ward?, which, notwithstanding they are the strongest Democratic wards in the city, both gav majorities for Wallace. THURSDAY MORNING. DEC. 4, 1&6. Th Election of Fiemont to tlie U. S. Senate. The proposition to elect CoL Fremont to the U. S. Tribune : "We hare receded from a respected correspondent a letter intended for publication, adYocaticg the election of Col. Fremont as United States Senator from this j3tate. We also observe that the same thing i recommended in one or two u Republican " newspapers. No doubt CcL Fremont would do credit to the Empire State in that capacity; but, as he Is not a citizen of New York, the project ia Impracticable. If he is elected to the Senate at all, it must be by California, to which State he belongs. That is sending the explorer back to Cali fornia a little quicker than any mule express erer yet organized could possibly carry him. Tha following article, interesting to millera, lusibermea anl manufacturers, w find ia the Scientific American : Yarioua correspondents have made Inquiries respecting the rolatire value of steam anil water power, and one asks: "Wnnther an inexhaustible water power or only water sufficed for steam purposes, with an unlimited supply of cheap fuel, are moat advantageous to the development of a manufacturing town." It is not possible to give a satisfactory answer to a general inquiry respecting the comparatiya adYsxtages of itoam and water power, but have no hesitation in answering the correspondent (in Iowa) from whose letter we hvo quoted the above extract An abundance of cheap fuel and steam power, in our opinion, possesses the greatest advantages for manufacturing purposes. Few manufacturing operations can be carried oa without fuel, even where there is plenty of water power; therefore where ful is Bcarce and dear, manufacturing cannot be carried on but. under...
