AMONG HORSEMEN THE ENGLISH THOROUGHBRED HORSE . GENERAL HISTORY . WE have no record of . the existence of the horse in England until the invasion of the island , when we know that large numbers were found here ready to oppose the landing , and used both in chariots and as cavalry . But this country never became remarkable for her breed of horses until after the time of the Stuarts , who paid great attention to this animal , and caused numbers of Arab stallions and mares to be imported . In the time of Henry VIII . the want of good horses was so much felt that an act was passed , forbidding any entire horse of a greater age than two years , and less than 15 hands , to be turned out in any common or waste land in the counties of Norfolk , Suffolk , Cambridge , Buckingham , Huntington , Essex , Kent , Hampshire , Wiltshire , Oxford , Bedfordshire , Warwickshire , Northampton , Yorkshire , Cheshire , Staffordshire , Lancashire , Salop , Leicester , Hereford , Lincoln , and North or Sout...

Farm , Garden and Orchard [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 23 January 1896

Farm , Garden and Orchard A BETTER PLAN . r T is very evident that as a moans of 1 reaching Illinois farmers at large , the . Farmer s Institute held at Springfield recently was a failure . After so much effort and the report that 1 , 500 farmers were expected to attend , the attendance was scarcely 200 ana this number would not Lave been present had it not been that the annual meetings of the several State live stock breeders associations were held at Springfield on the same days at a different hour so that those who came to attend the , Jive stock meetings or the meetings of the Poultry Association naturally put in theiitime at the institute meetings whi 1 . v > they had nothing else to do . Before the passage of the bill by 1 ne lart legislature creating this Farmer s Institute , we earnestly advocated ttio enactment of a law that would provide for holding Farmer s Institutes similar to those held in Wisconsin , urging that they be under the direction or control of the...
