CURRENT COMMENT . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 19 January 1907

CURRENT COMMENT . The cartoon on this FREE SEEDS , page , reproduced through the courtesy of the Plain Dealer , illustrates the waste of the Congressional free distribution of seeds . Every one who receives a packet of seeds may not feed it to the chickens , but a large proportion of the Congressional distribution is wasted . The appropriation last year was $ 242 ,- 920 ; in 1905 and 1906 it was $ 290 , 000 . For five years past the number ot packets put up and jnailed every year was close to 36 . 000 , 000 . Secretary Wilson says in his report for 1905 that these packets each year would fill 28 cars of 30 , 000 pounds per car , or 840 ,- 000 pounds . All this had to be put up in little packets , requiring an immense amount of labor extending from about November 1 to the last of April , and then all this must be transported through the mails , free . It is only the common or standard varieties that can be used in this immense distribution—such varieties as are for sale by all seedsm...

NOTES AND QUERIES . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 19 January 1907

NOTES AND QUERIES . Horse Statistics . —Is the number of horses In the United States increasing materially ? How does the number compare with ten or more years ago , when horses were so low ? L ., Wayne Co ., O . — Here are the figures from the statistical bureau of the Department of Agriculture : Jan . 1 . 1906 1 S . 718 . 57 S 1905 17 , 057 , 702 1904 16 , 736 , 059 1903 16 , 557 , 373 1902 16 , 531 . 224 1901 16 , 744 , 723 1900 13 . 537 , 524 1899 13 , 655 , 307 1898 13 , 960 , 911 1897 14 . 364 . 667 1896 15 . 124 , 057 1895 15 , 893 , 318 1894 16 . 081 , 139 1893 16 , 206 , 802 1892 15 , 498 , 140 This is far enough to go back , as from 1880 up to 1893 the number increased every year . The number has been increasing since 1902 , and there are more horses In this country now than ever before , but not as many fully matured horses . We imagine that that there is a pretty large crop of yearlings , two-year-olds and even three-year-olds . The statistics for 1906 will be published ...

I POULTRY 1 [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 19 January 1907

I POULTRY 1 HOUSING FARM POULTRY IN WINTER . So long as the earth Is bare and the fowls can roam and forage about the premises at will , there is little care necessary , except to see that they have access to plenty of fresh , pure water , and have a proper proportion of feed to keep them in good condition . A mature pullet or hen if given the right percent of grain and roughage win under such conditions almost without fail , begin to produce eggs during the open weather of early winter and as long as her conditions are right she will continue profitable . For the past several years we have been very successful in getting plenty of eggs during the winter , and only accomplish this by controlling our hens in a well-fltted poultry house built especially to meet this condition . The house we have is 14 x 56 feet , built with a shed roof , and faces the south with just glass enough In the southern frontage to admit light to the interior . It is 8 feet high in front , 4 feet in rear . Th...

PILES Cured Quickly and Painlessly—No Risk , No Danger . A Free Trial Package to Convince Sent by Mail to Ali Who Write . Common sense is just as necessary ( even more so ) in medicine as in business or the affairs of every day life . People are getting to know more than they used to . They want to try the remedy first , and if they find it to be what is claimed they will be glad enough to go and buy it . A CONVINCING ARGUMENT . That is why we say to every person suffering from piles or any form of rectal disease , send us your name and we will gladly send you a free trial package . For we know what the result will be . After using the trial you will hurry to your nearest druggist and get a BO-ct . box of Pyramid Pile Cure , now admitted by thousands ...

THE QUESTION OF BEST BREED . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 19 January 1907

THE QUESTION OF BEST BREED . The question is asked nearly every day , What is the best breed ? My experience is that the breed you like the best is the one . Much depends on how one is situated and what . particular line one wishes to engage in . The non-sitting breeds , such as Leghorns , Minorcas , etc ., are the ones to adopt if you want eggs . You are sure of them if you give proper housing , feed and care . Besides there is no breed of poultry that attains the weight of l / i lb . quicker , and I have learned that it is best to sell at that weight and get clear of feeding them . If you keep them until they weigh 2 VJ to 3 lb . the price always drops and counting feed and care you are the loser . Some say the Leghorn is too small and too mischievous , but I have noticed that those that talk this way are people generally , that have never given them a fair , impartial trial . If you want general purpose fowls the Plymouth Rocks , Wyandottes and Reds , are sure of filling the bill...

A GOOD RETURN FROM DUCKS . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 19 January 1907

A GOOD RETURN FROM DUCKS . A large flock of ducks increases my profits every year . The eggs are sold for setting in the spring at good prices , and there is always a good sale for the feathers . I raise the full-blood-ed Pekin ducks which sometimes weigh over seven pounds when sold in the fall . I have found out by experience that they are much less trouble than chickens or turkeys , as they seldom die from disease . Ducks will almost take care of themselves after they have been hatched a short time . Set the eggs in May . As soon as the ducks are large enough to eat , sprinkle thick curd in their boxes . Shallow vessels should be used for watering and they should not be allowed to get too wet . When they get a little older feed potato peelings mixed with meal and scraps from the table . They like a variety and will do much better when the food is changed often . As they grow older feed some grain , such as wheat , rye and corn . When all the grain fed is raised on the farm the cos...
