Gathering Osage Orange Seed . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 28 March 1868

Gathering Osage Orange Seed . Iu response to an inquiry by one of our subscribers as to the best methods of securing the seed of the Osage Orange , W . H . MANN , of Oilman , 111 ., sends us the following : The oranges should be gathered up before freezing weather , and with a good sharp butcher knife pure the orange down to the seed ; be careful not to cut the-seed . As the oranges are pared , throw them into a barrel or vat of water , and let them lay until softened , when they can be taken in the hand and squeezed out very easily . In Texas , where we gather in large quantities , we nse horse-power and machinery , but ( or a few open bushes of oranges , the method given above is the best—unless the oranges have laid out during the Winter and have been frozen and are partly rotten , in which case the best way is to mash them up into a pomice and let them lay until thoroughly rotted , when they may be washed out .

Letter from London-Social Coricution . of : . ¦ England . Z .. -. • . • . _ .. ! The subject of commercial mbralityys at present under discussion in England , and the opinion is pretty generally entertained that the scandals and fr . uds which are sapping English trade have reached such a climax that something must be done to remedy the evil . Government interference with joint-stock companies ls loudly demanded , as well as a severer punishment of commercial dishonesty . Shareholders insist that they ought to have greater protection against delusive speculations ; that there ought to be some means of deciding what are safe and what are unsafe investments ; they ought to be protected against cooked accounts ; and that the mysteries of capital and railways should be made plain to the meanest understanding .
