ON THE PI . AV , r ., ; IHB ( ' MIVATION OF ORCHARDS . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 15 December 1831

ON THE PI . AV , r ., ; IHB ( MIVATION OF ORCHARDS . [ From love on Fruit Trees . ] ( The first thing to be determined on in the planting of an orchard is , the proper distance of the trees : if a mere fruit plantation be the object , the distance may be small ; if the cultivation of grain and grass be in view , the space between the trees must be wider . At thirty feet apart , an acre will contain 48 trees : at thirty-five feet , 35 trees ; at forty feet , 27 trees ; and at 50 feet , about 18 to an acre—these are the usual distances . In my own plantations , I have adopted the various distances , according to the depth and character of the soil ; about two thirds of the ground . comprising 100 acres , are planted at 50 feet ; on the remaining 33 acres I have tried 30 , 35 and 40 feet ; and as far as it could conveniently be done I have planted trees of the smallest growth on the lightest soil . Taking every circumstance into consideration . it will probably be . found that forty ...

The moon which occasionally burst from the dense clouds that darkened the scene , shone full upon tteir savage forms , which accorded with the wild gloom that surrounded them , and disclosed their vessels , lying at anchor in the distance . THE DEVIL IN THE BUTTER -MILK . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 15 December 1831

THE DEVIL IN THE BUTTERMILK . During my stay in Ireland , being on a visit to a friend , who resided in one ofthe distant parishes , I was stricken with the cherry cheek-and tempting lips of a young dairy maid , w . om I often saw pass the house in which I resided . I inquired her name and residence , and found that she lived with a protestant parson , w rho be-ides preaching the doctrines of the gospel , kept a very extensive farm . After a few side-winks at this pretty damsel , I determined to make her a visit during the time the preacher delivered from t e pulpit his twice told sermon . — I went accordingly , as soon as I observed t e parson and his dame enter t ie church . It is needless to tell of the many soft words w ispered into her ear ; suffice it to say I found her just as I should wis i ; but unluckily love is so insensible to every thing but his own general feelings , that I overstayed my time . We were roused from our pleasing chat by the old man and his wife thunder...
