So many exaggerations have been writ. ten concerning Arizona's pet saurian by newspaper correspondents and by scien tific men on information derived from old time Arizonans who were willing to blacken this unfortunate reptile's char acter as much as possible; that it is high time the public were informed as to the character and habits oi the Heloderraum Horridum. His scientific name as given above might be rojghly translated "rough skinned fright" and a fright he certainly is, which is probably the only fonndation for all the slurs which have been cast on his character. Many are prone to attach a bad character to an) thing ugly and be yond the pale of things dreamed of in his philosophy. Were the Gila monster one-half as black as he is painted, life would not be safe in Anions, and we should have to walk on stilts to escape his horrid fangs.
