Prompt action and satisfactory results characterize the new tariff law, its completion being earlier than that of any tariff bill since the one enacted by the first thinkers, and its provisions being more thoroughly satisfactory to the people than any which this generation has seen. Now that the treasury and the business people id the country arc to have plenty of money under the new tariff law, the adminis tration wants, a a next step, to be sure that the money shall be as "good as the best," hence its desire for the enactment of a general revision measure. The vote on the new tariff bill began in the senate last Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock, ' litre it passed by a vote of 40 to 30. Shortly after 3:30 it was signed by Speaker Reed, then sent to vice president for his signature, thenc...

THE CHIEFTAIN. Weekly Crop Bulletin. July 27, 1897. The week ending July 26 was fairly favorable tor most crops. Occasional showers furnished the necessary moisture to nearly all localities, but the nights in the northern part of the territory were too cool for rapid growth of various crops. Coro was es pecially retarded. On the morn ing of the 20th a light white frost was reported at several stations in the northern part of the terri tory at stations ot high alitude. No serious damage result from this except the checking of growth. Wheat in the southern part has about all been harvested and the grinding has commenced. Early peaches are ripe and an excellent crop is being shipped. Apricots are abundant and early apples arc ripening. Jne f Mr f2.nO t months 1.25 "Perfidy and dishonor" are thing of the past of democratic .past. The last week in July, 1897, will Jong be remembered as the first one under the new tariff law. Reports from every direction show that the effeet has been instantly tcucctivc, both in manufacturing and business circles. The "hold up" of the Dingley 11 in the senate by the democrats and populists is the cause of the li'lit receipts which may be ex pected under that measure in its first few months by reason of the enormous importations that the "holdup" permitted the importers to make. ti-t of the I'n-e Trade EiixTinit'iit. THE CHIEFTAIN. New Mexico Ilortlcaltaral Socletjr. The New Mexico Horticultural Society was incorporated as a ter ritorial institution in 1886. Since that tima it has held a number of meeting at which papers have been read and addresses made, and has endeavored in a modest way to bring together those en gaged in fruit culture, to make an exchange of experience, to dis seminate horticultural information of value and to obtain desirable legislation. The vast increase in the horti cultural interest in New Mexico now makes it necessary to take a forward step and to hold an annual exhibition of fruits. This will be a benefit, not only by de monstrating which varieties are best adapted to our circumstance, by bringing about a correct n-omen-clature and by promoting" ac quaintance and friendship among those engaged in kindred pursuits, but by letting the world know the quality and extent of the fruit product of New Mexico and thus ncting as an advertisement of that !roduct and opening new ...
