LEWISBURG CHRONICLE & WEST BRANCH FARMER. The editor of the Amrrimn Ayriruhu- j rid states that from the experiments for lit last lour years 01 some ui iuu uesi farmers and planters in the States of Del aware, Maryland, and Virginia, herc this fertiliser is used more extensively thau iu any other States iu tho Union, it is demonstrated 'That the most economical application. tf fluauo is at the rate of 200 pounds per acre, sown broad cast, upon very poor land prepared for wheat, and plowed in, nn mat ter lfw ilerp, upon which sow the wheat and harrow or plow in, without disturbing the gmuo. In no case, fail to sow clover upon the wheat, the time for which varies from November to May, in the opinion of iliffavnt pi r sons, for the benefit derived from the guano to the clover and through that to the land, is of more value than the wheat, and the average increase of that is at least five bushels to the 100 pounds of guano used. LEWISBURG CHRONICLE & AVEST BRANCH FARMER. mm mm AM ft flmUftl. Valuable and Seasonable Hints, Vrum LU Albany Cultiator. We End iu this luoutbly agricultural j-eriodical the following article relative to matter and thiugs about a farm, which should engage the attention of every farmer fast at this time. It is true every good, practical agriculturist may know a'.l about his duties; but however knowing ho may le, will he always think to do that at the i exact period when it ought to be done, and ' which, when so done, may be of consider-, ation in the operations of the farm ? There I is nothing like being reminded of our du- ties, and especially cf that class of theru, which, without it, would frequently be overlooked and neglected. Besides, the article in qncstion, not only indicates the duties to be performed, but the best way of. been cut and burned. LEWISBURG CHRONICLE & WEST BRANCH FARMER. of the 15riti.!i population during the lat five years ? The answer in, by famine and emigration. But, to get to the bottom of the question, we must discover the causes of this famine and emigration. These can only be a diseased social and political sys tem ; and such .Mr. Allison r.'preseuts theui to be. Kut while be attributes them tit ftv trade, we trace them deeicr into the f:tlric of society, though we admit that free trade may have assisted, perhaps, to dovelope thciu prematurely. It is theuu equal distribution of the soil which now in England, as of old in Home, is bringing on natioLal decay and death. There is a feature of this decline in pop ulation even more eloquent of ruin than the general fact. The falling off is princi pally in the rural districts. All history teaches that, when a country is sinking, the inhabitants decrease in the agricultural portions first. Iong after the plains of Italy had become desolate, and when deg ...

that potatoes left io tbe ground after dig ging iiprang up much earlier than those planted in the spring. . I shall try the ex "periment on larger scale this fall, and I hare no doubt of its success. TWces-Barre, Pa. L. KIDDER. MJuctge Kidder's opinion justly car ries with it much weight, yet there is one objection to his theory of the cause of the potato rot. In this region, the potato season has been very dry, but not very hot ; and yet, wo hear of more of the rot than we did last season, although the last was comparatively a wet season, and the yield was better than it now is. The rot has prevailed on sandy as well as on clay oils ; in Europe, as well as in America ; and there is no mention of it in history, within our knowledge, prior to its becom ing an epidemic, although heavy rains and hot sans following have occurred continu ally since the cultivation of the plant It is true, the plant may have been affected somewhat similarly, at other periods of its history ; and so there ...

LEWISBUliG CHRONICLE & WEST BRANCH FARMER. Thoughts on the Potato Rot . Since tbe offer made by the Legislator 1 of Massachusetts, of a reward of $10,CKH to the person who shall discover the cause aud the cure of the potato rot, we have had Jt'truivrii in regard to it, as " plenty as blackberries." Insects, at the prcscut day, have to bear the sin of the whole loss of the potatoes, and of course all the devices for killing iusccts have been recommended, from showering with tobacco water, up to the whitewashing of the stems aDd leaves. We have paid considerable attention to the subject, and do not believe there is a c'iugle insect more now found among the potatoes, than there was forty years ago, long and long before the potato rot was heard of. One states that there is a little black bug which skips about like a ilea, and eats holes through the leaf. Auother finds a worm iu the stalk, which has eaten a channel up and down, and caused the tup to wilt. Another finds a blackish pur...
