The attempt of Gortschakoff, Oranville, and the Nsw NoaTr-Wass to get up a first-class war in time for the holidays is under as inauspicious cloud just now. From present indications Russia and Eng land are just as liable to be exchanging assu rances of friendship as broadsides on New Years. The blackest clouds at this season of ten presageonly wihd, and the lightnings of Europe are clasped tightly by those Minis terial Jupiters who shake not their horror laden shields among the peoples. Granville, was re buked for exposiug the claws of the Lion so fiercely at the ominous ruffling of feath ers on the Russian Eagle, and now we have it that Gortschakoff weakened and sent a conciliatory reply, just a day too soon. If war is averted now it is only deferred. Prussjs is evident fro...

At Irregular Intervals nations and coin inuaities are subjected to some subtle resl sent process by which individual projects, ambitions and energies are precipitated and become for the time the one predominant, absorbing theme of conversatln, scheme, and effort. These have been known and classed as manias. Montana has not been an exception. The placer excitement con aquent of the discovery of Alder Gulch. The Vigilante, Quartz, Indian and Chinese questions have in turn monopolized public attention, and excited tongues and pens, and even the considerate dollar to unwonted ac. Utilty and recklessness. Every land and people and community of intelligence and enterprise is subject to these semi-occasional breakings out. To them may be traced much of material development, for the fol lys of the mania are oft times but the evan paeent froth and bubble on the great current of advancem...
