A MARYLAN]) SEAT'' T'O BE CONTEST El). [Baltimore American, N, v. 8tl,.] ' We underst:uei that Colo, nel. J. Palr.ln Crane, re1pub lican candidate for congress i:n the fifth district of this State has served a notice of contest on Dr. Eli K. Henkle, the Democratic candidate, who will doubtless get the certifi cate of election. A large majority of the voters in the fifth district are republicans, and in a pefectly free and fair election even a more popular and able Democrat than Dr. Henkle would have but little chance of success. The sev enteenth ward of Baltimore city and the upper districts of Ann Arundel county can be relied on, however to furnish whatever ballots are necessary to overbalance the republican majority. We.,are .informed that the most flagrant frauds were committed in the seven teenth ward at the election on Tuesday, and that conclu sive proof can be furnished of the same. Hence the notice of contest. Although we have no expectation that the parti san majority in the...

Ab VT Er Editor and Business M1anusger St. Framcisville, I)ec., 7, |8?8. a We are not responsible for the statements or opinions of correspond enta . That chronic officeholder, the Hon. Michael Hahn, has received the grand bounce at the venerabie government pensioner, Henry S. Foote, of Tennessee, was presented to the senate as superintend ent of the New Orleans mint. The reason for the change is said to be the action of super intendent Hahn in the late election in the Third District. He was accused of aiding the canvass of Mr: Acklin by keep ing Merchant in the field,"and this seems to have been suffi cient ground for his removal. There will be a stalwart howl over the appointment of the ancient Tennessee politician, of course. It will be regarded as a reflection upon 'the par ty' in Louisiana, and will be resented accordingly. The...
