REBATE CHARGES CASES AGAINST RAIL " ROADS DISCONTINUED •THE IMMUNITY BATH WILL BE DISSIPATION OF ALL EVI DENCE GATHERED. It Is said In federal court circles of - Chicago that the Chicago & Alton will receive the expected "immunity bath." According to this Information the Investigation of rebate charges in .connection with the Standard Oil caße will be dropped. In spite of the demand of Judge Landis for a grand jury inquiry Into the acts of the Alton, it Is believed ' that the grand Jury will be discharged without making the Investigation. THE CHARITY GIRL By EFffE A. ROWLANDS CHAPTER VII. „ Eheila Fraser was a IrtUe perturbed iuiing the week that followed as to tho rery apparent change that had come over Jack Glendurwood. He came to Dingle wood nearly every day, but in an almost pointed manner he gave her t3 understand that hie visits were to Mrs. Fraser, and not to herself. Sue racked her brain to find the real reason. Was it jealousy of Beverley Rorfjj'ort, with whom she certainly'had flirted, though very mildly, since he had coins on the scene; or was it caused by the knowledge that, as diy after day went by, the poor Marquis of Iverne's coiriitfos grew worse, and he, John Glen durwood, would be to a certainty in the deal man's place and heir to <he dukedom before many months had elapsed? The thought of this approaching event, It need hardly be said, whetted Sheila's eagerness and Intense desire to become Lord John's acknowledged flr.ncee. She might worry and think until she was tired, but she would never guess...

THE CLIFF HOUSE RESORT NEAR 'FRISCO BURNED DOWN. WAS LOCATED ON PROMINENT POINT OUT FROM GOLDEN GATE. San Francisco, Sept. 8. —The fa mous Cliff House of this city, San Francisco's first attraction for tourists, was burned to the ground Saturday evening. Fire broke out in the build ing about 4:45 o'clock, and an hour later a blackened heap of ruins was all that remained of the historic struc ture. The house was built of wood, and fanned by th» lively ocean breezes, the flames made such headway be fore the nearest fire company arrived that it was realized that the place was doomed, and more attention was paid to saving adjoining property than to the burning building. The Cliff House had been closed for some time, as the new lessee, John Tait, was remodeling the interior. Workmen were about the place until noon, and then departed for the day. How the fire started Is a mystey. This was the second Cliff House to be destroyed by fire. The building which was burned today was erected by Ad...
