"W ASHraoTON, May 16—Despite the low ering clouds and threatening yesterday, to-day proved most auspicious for the op ening ccremonies of the reunion of the army of the Potomac. By 9 o'clock the various uniformed military organizations which were to take part in the parade were on the move and sounds of martial music greeted the ear from a dozen quarters. At 11 o'clock the escort under command of Brevet Major General 11. Bayres, U. S. A took a station along 15th street with right resting on Pennslvania avenue. The society of the army of the Potomac, under command of Gen. Hum phrey, president of the society, and this staff formed in a column of fours at the lliggs house. V, I nL'* THE WEEKLY ALERT. J. C. WARNOCK, EDITOR. THE spectacle of tlie two Germans going out with a large procession of spec tators almost the very streets of Chi cago, and fighting a duel with broad swords at once recommends the with drawal of some of our missionaries from heathen lands and assigning them to duty in that modern Babylon of iniquity We might send them some reformers from our own Devil's Lake, which so recently received the reprimand of the press of that city, who would be elevating models for the city on the lake. V) hat makes it still more uncivilized they were both married men and contending over the af fections of a maiden. The enterprise of the people of Chicago is diversified. UNCLE TOM, the original of Harriet Beecher Stowe's hero, in her story of Uncle Tom's Cabin, whom millions of people have seen die on the stage, did not die until a few days ago. He died last Saturday at Dresden, Ont., at the age of ninety-four years. His r«al name was Josiah Henson, ...

THE drive well contest before the United States circuit court in iowa has just been dccided against the plaintiff, in effect that the patent claimed was in valid. The agents o£ the patentee have been levying tribute] upon the farmers throughout that state and soiLe others claiming those drive wells were an in fringement upon a patent, and as no farmer cared to spend the money neces sary to contest the matter they paid out of the difficulty as the cheapest way out. Bat this kind of robbery became so an noying and burdensome that the farmers combined to tes.t the question in the courts, and with the aboye result. The case will now go to the supreme court of the United (States for a final hearing and with a strong probability of like result. WARNOCK, EDITOR. v*"" til? ?'f4 i- la an elaborate article in the Press and JDgkotaian on the subject o£ statehood for Dakota Hon. Hugh J. Campbell, of a Yankton, takes the ground that the sov ereign power and authority of statehood is with the people of the territory, and that "the people of Dakota have but to speak ,,2 the word and the state of Dakota is." He asserts that the thirteen states, Vermont, Kentucky, Tennessee, Maine, Michigan, Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Wisconsin, California, Kansas, Oregon and Nevada formed their state governments without any enabling act by congress and upon their own authority. The distinguished gentleman cites numerous authorities for his view tf state organization, that of Michigan being the most forcible and pointed. The Michigan case, however, .- proves too much for his theory of the sovereign right of statehood inherent in...

CHICAGO journalism is very amusing in some of its features. The greatness of newspapers as well as that of men is mostly due to the positions they occupy. Tjie Inter Ocean of Chicago recently pooled with some metropolitan papers of other cities to obtain by cable Bpurgeon's Sunday sermons in London for publica tion Monday morning. What was the 'chagrin and aggravation of the Inter- Ocean last Monday morning to find the Tribune had secured the same thing at its own expense and its newsboys were drowning the cry of t**ose of the Inter Ocean in making the fact known to the people that the Tribune contained Bpur geon's sermon in London of the day be fore. Now these secular dispenses of the gospel are in a war of words over the enterprise which manifests such an un christian spirit as to neutralize the evangeliz...

THE WEEKLY ALERT. J. C. WARNOCK, EDITOR. The removal of the capital of the terri toiy from Yankton to Bismarck will probably be the occasion of calling a spe cial session of the legislature next winter, Wttrany^)&"f5iin3 that the removal bill, carried through last winter in the lion's den aiQl unde^tbe terrific lire of the op position is deficient in some important particulars. It was rushed through under circumstances that would preclude the possibility of that due deliberation and consideration of all the bearings which auch legislation should command. The bill is perhaps all right so far as it goes, but if unforseen deficiences do not pre sent themselves as the execution of the law progresses it will be little less than a marvel, and these will have to be reme died by a special session or the work will be either retarded, deficient or the pow ers conferred by the law ovcr-reached, which would be seized upon and taken advantage of by the opponents of the re moval.
