Vii„ as second-class matter. A Convenient Kitelicn. As the farmers, to whom interests these columns are especially devoted, have a direct and very personal interest in the kitchen, we glean some suggestive points from an account of one which Mr. Eben E. Rexford, Schiocton, Wis., thinks "a model'' and describes at length in The Western Plowman. It may give a useful hint or two to those who are repairing or building new : "It is perhaps sixteen feet square. On one side stands a stove of a fair size, with hot-water reservoir, warming oven, and convenient iron shelves in the pipe. This stove is out in the room far enough to allow a person to move about it easily. Immediately back of it is a wood box which reaches through the wall into the woodhouse. By lifting a cover in the shed, the box can be filled from the out...

There is now no doubt that Blaine is lending his countenance and support to the Straightout Republicans in this State. He has been no idle looker-on in the contest now going on. He lias kept himself informed with the most accurate information of the condition of affairs in the Old Dominion. He now speaks out openly and declares that he has no (sympathy with the present Mahone coalition movement and maintains that Arthur has made a great mistake in lending his aid to Mahone, and in turning over the entire control of the patronage of the Federal Government to him, and that the Republican party at large has suffered greatly by it. It is iwperitively necessary that orders given and requests made by our leaders shall be promptly and faithfully carried out. This is most especially the case in an organization like ours, where obedience is purely voluntary. Eveiy Democrat ought to feel in Aonor bound to carry out the instructions of our teaiiers to Vis utmost ability and capacity. These leaders devote a great deal of time and thought upon matters connected with the campaign ; they therefore know best what is needed to be done, who are the best persons to do it, .and how is the best w.iy. The Art of Pruning. The lessons from which we learn the art of pruning as a science are very common, and are taught in multiple repletion, (gratuitously,) in the physi ological construction of trees in the natural woods. The manner of tree-structuve in its fixed organization of parts, is a simple reproduction, in miniature form of itself. The severed branch resembles the tree iu whole, and the analogy may be traced on every divergency therefrom. The structural growth being wholly directed to the epidemis of the plaut, it cannot rise up in ite stretches from crotch to crotch like the anatomy of the animal creation. Nature has provided cause to overcome this difficulty, by the complexture of subjects in the woods. That is by clustering many trees together a canopy is formed, and as it is the un...
