For the Placer Times. BALLAD [Newspaper Article] — Placer Times — 22 September 1849
For the Placer Times. BALLAD BY STEPHEN C. MASSETT. I never gave thee cause to break Thy vow, so finely given; I never thought that thou would'st make This heart so desolate, or shake My soul's belief in Heaven! I never thought thou would'st be one To blast me with a look of scorn — What to thee have I ever done To turn thy very heart to stone, Or plant in mine a thorn? No — but in after years, when I Shall be forgotten, thou shalt see From other realms beyond the sky My spirit from its home on high In visions bright watch over thee. The following paragraph from the Morning Star, published in New-York City, will not be found entirely destitute of common sense: No Restriction.—We submit to Congress the evident impolicy of restricting emigration from any quarter of the world to California, or re...
