Out of over 200 counties in the state of Texas, Bastrop County was one of only five selected to be the most worthy of comprehen sive study In fact the state was so interested in learning about this county it was willing to provide the county with a $100,000 evaluation research study, conducted by the Rice Institute, if the count v "vould be willing to cover some of the incidental costs, two to three thousand dollars at most This is what The judge brought to the commissioners and to two of them at least you would think he had offered a two thousand dollar study for a cost of $100,000 One commissioner voted against accepting the service and another didn't even bother to vote ("abstained" is the euphemis...

THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 1975 THE BASTROP COUNTY TIMES, SMITHVILLE, TEXAS 78957 Midnight Owls Began As 6 Year Olds' Pipe Dream By P.R Smith * Six years ago, Doyle and Dayle Frerlch announced to their parents, Arthur and -Tiny, that tfcey were going to organize a band to play at parlies and dances. Dayle would play the drums, be an- nounced, and Doyle would play guitar and organ. Their elder brother, Ronnie, had agreed to ' add his guitar to the group. Since the twins were all of six years old at the time, their parents smiled and said: "Go ahead," promptly dismissing tbe announcement as typical six-year-old pipe dreaming. But they soon realized that the boys were quite serious about these unrealistic plans Undaunted by their tender age or the fact that Dayle's 'drums' consisted of pots and pans at the time, the twins and 12 year old Ronnie worked long hours each day to perfect their ability. None of the three could jread a note of music, nor had any except Ronnie ever had lessons. (Just...
