TEXAS MINJNG AND TRADE JOURNAL Grand Cake=Walk for the NewYear Ball. Some of the boys and girls have prevailed upon the program committee to have a cake-walk on the program for the New Year ball. Mr. Reeves, as chairman of the arrangement com- mittee, will offer a prize, or two prizes, for the best lady and gentleman contestants. Judges are to be selected from the audience. By request, the names of the parties to contest will not be made public until they appear upon the floor imme- diately after the supper intermission. They are to be some of our best young people, and already elaborate costumes are in making, and those who are to contest are earnestly rehearsing. Say! but that ball is going to be up to now. You can't afford to miss it. The boj7s and girls here who are to contest are re- hearsing with every orchestra practice at the Opera House, and it has been hinted that there would be contestants from among the visitors. The night is looked forward to with much interest. Brave M...

TEXAS MINING AND TKADE JOURNAL. CELEBRATE THE NEW YEAR. ENJOY YOURSELVES WHILE! LIVING, FOR VOU WILL BE A LOINIG TIME DEAD! THURBHR people are going to celebrate the glad New Year of Nineteen Hundred, and, in an effort to please the majority, have decided up in a grand hall and supper for Monday night, January i, 1900. The ball will be given at the Opera House, and the supper from 11:30 P. M. to 1 A. M. at Hotel Knox. A large number of out- of-town triends have been invited—they are coming, too, a great many of them—and special efforts will be exercised in their behalf. They will be shown a good time. The invitations r> quest that an acknowledgement be mailed at once to the Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Robert Maxey Loflin, that the Committee may know just what preparations to make with regard to the "feast." It is urged that friends receiving the " invites," if accepted, signify whether or not they will be accompanied by a lady. This applies to those both at home and abroad, an...

Entered at the Post Oftice at Thurber, Texas, as Second-Class Mail Matter. Thurber, Texas: Saturday, December 30, 1899. The talk of making next year's campaign a short one was disposed of by the action of the Republican National committee in setting June 19 for the holding of their National convention, and it is practically certain that the Democrats will fix the date for their National convention close to that chosen by their op- ponents, and that the Presidential campaign will be about the usual length. That it would be better for the country at large if the nominating conventions were held sometime in September, whith would compress the campaign into about tw...

TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. o LOCAL AND PERSONAL NOTHS. Mr. Reeves requests that all who intend attending the ball come in TODAY and get their tickets. This is necessary, in or- der that the Supper Committee may know just how many peo - pie to prepare for. Of course, you can get tickets Monday, but the delay will inconvenience the committee somewhat. Get them today, or have them laid aside. Don't forget Mr. Reeves' big doll for next Monday. Don't fail to see that prize cake-walk New Year night. Read The Texas Mining and Trade Journal—$1 a year. Mr. Witt, the jeweler, will return Sunday from his vacation. Get some of Uncle Nat's Money tonight at the Opera House. Mr. Ed Wilson of Cisco will assist the orchestra at the ball Monday night. Stock-taking is the order of the day and night now in the va- rious departments. Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Guthrie entertained a few of their friends at Christmas dinner. TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. FLASHES OF THOUGHT. by professor d. s. landis. A tramp is an evangel of laziness. Every village has its little Napoleon. Love was childless until Hope was born. "Poets are born, not made." So are fools. Right is a sword cleaving the bones of error. The sure man is either a bigot or his brother fool. The sun is the greatest physician that ever chased a miasma. Who can open his senses has all the mysteries of thought and time. Talent is the high sounding name given to hard work and sincerity of purpose. The Spirit answers not the understanding, but the heart knows and interprets. THE STORY. The world is binding link with a link, Making and breaking and welding the chain; And strangest goblets brimming with drink Are caught from skies that tell of the rain. The world is sowing stitch with a stitch, Finding and winding and turning the seams, And threads are thrown from the spools of a witch, Till thoughts of the years are tangled in dreams. The world is b...

TEXAS MINING AND TKADE JOUKNAL The New Year Ball Was a Grand Affair. When the suggestion was offered a few weeks ago that a New Year ball be given in Thurber, it was approvedby every one (not opposed to dancing), and from the afternoon on which the first meeting was held to discuss the matter a unity of action was manifest. Upon the invitation and arrangement committees the greater part of the work fell, and that they did their work well is proven by the pronounced success of every detail and feature of the occasion—of the ball itself. It was indeed a fit farewell to the old year, with a remembrance of its vicissitudes and pleasures, in proportion as circumstances brought them about, and more fitting as a greeting to the New Year, the last of the present century. It was the occasion for the renewal of social ties, the opportunity to extend and receive the glad hand and exchange expressions from warm hearts and congenial souls, and right royally was this opportunity taken advantage o...
