Opinions 2 October 12 1989 the Brand Experience at carnival is not 'fair' originally this tale was created for my Oral Interpretations of Literature class but since the use of this story saved me the time and trouble of writing another story I decided to recycle my creativity. Keep in mind that this is a true story. Some of the names have been loft out to protect the innocent but all events are factual. For a child a fair can be one of the greatest experiences in his or her young life. When I was younger amusement parks were a challenge. The bigger and faster the rides the better time I had. When the West Texas Fair came to town I decided it was about time that I experienced the fair again. At age 21 the fair was not the same and the thrill was gone. The omens were there but I ig- nored them. It was about 50 degrees outside it felt like 30 when the wind blew. Of course the day before it had rained so the ground was nice and muddy. Oh yeah this day had been one of those days where yo...

Critic's choice 6 October 12 1989 the Brand reviews by Duane Simolke I theatre Lewis CarrohSix Impossi- ble Things Before Breakfast 'The executioner's argu- ment was that you couldn't cut off a head unless there was a body to cut it off from: that he had never done such a thing before and he wasn't going to begin at his time of life. The King's argument was that anything that had a head could be beheaded and that you weren't to talk nonsense.' Such is the rhetoric found in Lewis Carrol's classics 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass.' That scene in which the Cheshire Cat humiliates the King and Queen of Hearts is one of many scenes from the two books that are now in a play devised by Lee Potts and Marilyn Hetzel. The fast paced comedy is a participating entry in the American College Theatre Festival a national program that promotes college theatre. It premiered Sept. 28 at HSU's Van Ellis Theatre under the smooth direction of Trish McAdams. The cast move...

Sports the Brand October 12 1989 7 So much happens in the HSU world of sports that is hard to keep up with all of the events. Because of this "Sports etc." was developed to run down sporting events during the previous two to three weeks. September 18 Serge Hudson was the hero of the Cowboys 3-0 victory over Pan American University. Hudson scored one goal and passed out two assists in the rout of the Broncs. Joe Baffa and Kurt Rhudy were the other goal scorers for the Cowboys. One of the most hard fought mat- ches of the year was lost by the Cowgirls of volleyball at the hands of Abilene Christian University. The teams went the entire five games before concluding the match. Karen Peck had 16 kills 33 digs and five Sports etc. blocks to lead the Cowgirls. September 21 After slipping behind Lubbock Christian in the first game the volleyball team rallied to win the next three games and defeat LCU. HSU was 14-6 after the win. Peck had 18 kills. the Brand 2 October 26 1989 Opinions Golf club and wrestling have much in common When a person gets his own col- umn in a newspaper and has about 25 inches of copy space to fill he can say just about anything he wants right? Good I'm glad you agree. Now don't get me wrong I'm not going to speak out against apar- theid or try to save the whales in my column (although those are two very good causes) I just want to talk about life in general. Just overyday run-of-the-mill happen- ngs and nothing more. Sound bor- ing read on. Recently I had the oppurtunity to partake in two very different events that after much contempla- tion seem very similar. The first was selling programs at the Gatlin Brothers' Senior Southwest Golf Classic. The second was mud wrestling during Fall Fest. Every year the Southwest Golf Classic "happens" in Abilene (and every year it seems to have a dif- ferent name but that has nothing to do with my story so ignore these words in parenthesis-I'm just trying to use up...

News Features 4 October 26 1989 the Brand Students go beyond books in Britain experience by Ouane Simolke Part 2 of a 3-part series about HSU in Europe. Several HSU students left their classrooms this summer to study about literature and social work in Britain. Or. Larry Brunner professor of English and Dr. Oannis Cooper professor of sociology served as tour guides and instructors. The five week trip gave nineteenth century literature students the op- portunity to experience what they've read in a new way: through the eyes of the writers. London the wonder- ful and troubled place referred to in countless poems and stories sud- denly surrounded the students. Dr. Cooper's class examined the British welfare system its historical development its services and its methods. The course also compared the welfare systems in the U.S. and Britain. "The thing that stood out was the opportunity to observe other cultures" said Dr. Cooper. "You get a strong flavor of the uniqueness of people when y...

Features the Brand October 26 1989 5 Martin finds that there's no place like home or HSU by Duane Simolke Billie Martin has been at HSU since 1952 longer than any other faculty member. She is often asked what has kept her here. "Everyone asks me that" said the professor of physical education and gymnastics. "I really think it's because I've been to a lot of other places and other schools and every time I can't wait to get back to Hardin-Simmons and Abilene." Those other places Prof. Martin mentions include Russia China Japan and Norway as well as much of the United States. She has studied physical education in China and Greece taught in Texas and Japan and lead a summer group in Russia in 1987. "Russia and China were a lot alike" said Martin. Paulk gives advise on note- taking stress memory time Management understanding text oks and visual materials ading writing research oral reports vocabulary and taking the actual exam. Paulk's book was the text for a class by the same name which I took a few years ago. I've often referred to it since. Not only does Paulk offer excer- cises and advise but he also of s background and explanations to his theories. He relies on and knowledges several valuable sources. His 'eleven tension releasers' are adapted from a report by the National Association for Mental Health. One thing he reminds us of is the importance of recreation. Constant study is not healthy.
