the Sentinel ^OLUME 12 NO. 21 (214) 530-1100 SACHSE. TEXAS PUBLISHED WEEKLY JULY 1, 1987 B A' r:'-A VI I A First Contracts for Hwy. 190 To be Awarded in August Robert Dedman, chairman of the Texas Highway and Public Transportation Commission, an- nounced Monday that the final parcels of land have been pur- chased by the City of Garland for construction of Highway 190. The proposed highway will link Highway 78, near Naaman School Road, with Highway 35 in North Carrollton when eventual- ly completed. Dedman praised Garland offi- cials for their dedication in pursu- ing the project, while at the same time chastizing City of Dallas of- ficials for being lax in their high- way efforts. A onetime critic of Houston transportation. Dedman said that city has progressed to the point that it has surpassed Dallas in present transportation, as well as plans for the future. Dedman called for "eternal vigilance" to protect projects like Highway 190 from legislative raids. He said legislators eye h...

Then He called unto a thousand peoples and summoned the bravest among them. They came from the ends of the earth, each bearing a gift and a hope. The glow of adventure was in their eyes, and in their hearts the glory of hope. Page 9 Protect Your Pets Summer is here again in Texas, which means many long, hot, sunny days. Pet owners should be aware of the special problems this can present. Be sure your pet has access to fresh water at all times. Provide a container large enough to hold plenty of water, and remember to check it daily and keep it full. If necessary, secure the container in a manner so that the animal can't tip it over and spill its water. Provide a shady area for the animal to get out of the direct sun. This is especially important for long-haired and dark-colored animals. Dark colors absorb heat and the animal will overheat if shade is not available. Check your area to be sure it provides shade all hours of the day. An area shaded in the morning may not be shaded in the afternoon when the sun is in a different position. DO NOT leave your pet in a parked car. The animal can over- heat rapidly and death can result quickly. Fleas and ticks can make your pet miserable in summer heat. There are ...

Page 14 Feature Section Parents should try to mask favoritism By Willard Abraham, Ph.D. Copley News Service Q. Can I help it if one of my children is really my favorite? It's our oldest one who is such a joy to me. We like the same art, music, books, movies, almost everything. I don't get the same satisfaction from being with the other three (or with my husband, for that mat- ter). I dread thinking about his going away to college next year, and in fact have been trying, subtly, to convince him to go to one nearby and continue living at home. I don't see this as a problem, but my husband suggested that I write to you. A. You seem to have accom- plished one difficult task, but you may have two others with which to cope. Recognizing the feeling and at- titudes you have toward your eld- est is important. Equally import- ant, however, is the need to subdue as much as you can any overt demonstration of them, especially when your other children are around. It isn't particularly healthy to ...

Page 15 can bring is a personable and posi- tive "you." One of the best gifts I have found — and I have purchased scores of them — is a book by Dr Mainly for Soil iors Seuss. It is "You're Only Old Once," and is subtitled "A Book for Obsolete Children." In the fa- mous style and ability of his pic- ture and story books for children, author Theodor Seuss Geisel pre- sents a wildly humorous story about an older person who goes for a medical checkup. Those pro- cedures, from blood samples to shots. X-rays to open-in-the-back dressing gowns, are presented in such a witty way as to bring smiles (to outright laughter) at every step, every procedure "You're Only Old Once" is an absolutely funny, rewarding ad- venture for people in the hospital, or even for those nut considering the hospital at all. In hardcover, "You're Only Old Once" is pub- lished by Random House at $9.95 On other gifts, think of things that reaffirm the continued life- style of the person when he or she gets out of the ...

Xhe Sentinel VOLUME 12, NO. 22 (214) 530-1100 SACHSE, TEXAS PUBLISHED WEEKLY JULY 8. 1987 ■ City Council Awards Water/Sewer Rate Study The City Council Monday night awarded the water/sewer rate study contract to Joe M. Nail & Associates, Consulting Engi- neers of Dallas and got assur- ances from a representative from BMI, the garbage collection com- pany, that local service would improve. Nail described what the water/ sewer rate study would produce for an estimated fee of $8,500. He said through city asset records and other figures and a study of pipe lines and meters, his com- pany would present a picture of demand costs, volume costs, an analysis by individual consump- tion, and an overall valuable future guideline. City Manager Lloyd Henderson and Mayor Larry Holden, speak- ing in favor of the study, said that "for any kind of rate structure we adopt, we need to know the con- sumption.
