Reata February page 4 1988 Baseball Prospectus By HSU Sports Information Director Jimmy Pogue Last season was a roller coaster of sorts for Hardln-Simmons base- ball coach Larry Martindale After watching his Cowboys fall out of the gate to a 1-12 start Martindale guided the 'Pokes to a 27-31 re- cord by winning 26 of his last 45 Included in last year's roller coaster was a peak of two seven- game winning streaks and a valley of a nine-game and a five- game losing streak. This season with the return of All-America candidate Lynn Tur- ner to spearhead the team the return of centerfielder Lance Stampfli after a one-year absence and the addition of several key players the Cowboys may be some consistent starting pitching away from a roller coaster season that will never dip. No doubt about it this year's Cowboy team will be led by senior rightfielder Lynn Turner. Turner who has set three school records twice returns for his senior year after hitting .408 last season good for second all-t...

WSm 1 THE HARDIN-SIMMONS REATA November 4 1988 Page 3 Op-Ed' )r. Lawrence Clayton Liberal arts On the heels of E.D. Hirsh's charge that most Americans are particularly ill-informed on the important material related to the world in which they live and Bloom's notion of the clos- ing of the American mind it seems appropriate to remind students at Hardin-Simmons that they are presently involv- ed in those years of preparation which will allow them to run counter to the national trend of functional illiteracy by being well-informed. Regardless of who or what must take the blame for high school and college graduates who are functionally illiterate we must realize that it is the mission of each one of us students and faculty to devote at least part of .our effort to the life of the mind. I consider this responsibility an inherent part of the life of the college- educated person. THE HARDIN-SIMMONS REATA November 4 1988 Page 4 Features Social clubs face challenges by Steven Isaac One songwriter has said that changes are not permanent but change is. Change is the word to describe what social clubs are experiencing both nationwide and here at Hardin-Simmons University. The strong currents of in- dividualism that rose up in the sixties and seventies have taken their toll on fraternity and sorority membership. Dr. Paula Windham associate dean of stu- dent development said that the drop has been a sign of the times because "it has not been the 'in' thing to be in a social club." The impact has been felt at HSU where several of the clubs are down from their heyday numbers of the 1970s. Chris Wilson president of Tau Alpha Phi said his fraternity has felt the impact and it has seriously worried their alumni. Stephen Hill president of Sigma Delta Sigma revealed that his frater- nity was reduced to two members two years ago. Part of the result of this trend has been t...
