"THE WONDERFUL LOVE." TO THE EDITOR OF THE INDEPENDENT. [Newspaper Article] — Independent — 19 May 1883

"THE WONDERFUL LOVE." TO THE EDITOR OF THE INDEPENDENT. SIR,-In your last issue I have shown that the Bible is neither responsible for the spiritual death theory, nor yet or that of "Infant or original sin," and; in harmony with the Bible, reason rejects it also, and pronounces it im possible that any breach of law by one man can become the act of another, either by direct transmission through birth or any other means. W\e do read of- the spirit of revenge . being transmitted fromf fattier to son b?r beiuest, as a solemn trust to hunt down the offenders, from the parents to. their childreniaiid children's children, till generations of innocent beings have been- the victims- of ia relentless blood thirsty persecution; bysuch cruel and vindictive foes. The worship of-the God of the Bible never produced . such results; but as the character described .harmonises exactly with the god of theicatechismss creeds, and confes sions of faith, and as a matter.of course of the Baptists also, we ...

More Improvements. [Newspaper Article] — Independent — 19 May 1883

More improvements. A DEPUTATION from the Borough Council will wait on the Harbour Trust on Monday next, to urge certain improvements in the extension of wharfage accommodation. Permission will also be asked to plant trees along the river bank, . the portion between, the stone-cutting works and Yarraville being resorted to on Sun days by hundreds as a promenade. Shculd consent be obtained, the Council will proceed with the tree-planting, aryd the place will thus be beautified and rmndecrd' attraclive..- The great question, however, to be dealiwith is the filling up of the low-lying land in the vicinity of the gas works. This land, some twenty-five acres in extent, has ever been an eyesore and a nuisance, for whenever the river overflows its banks it is' inundated, and there-being no out let, the. water lies sweltering in the sun, and propagating germs of fatal disease until it evaporates. Some years ago an-attempt was made to induce the Trust to land silt there and reclaim the waste....

The Independent "ONWARD AND UPWARD." FOOTSCRAY, SATURDAY, MAY 19, 1883. Steps Towards Federation. [Newspaper Article] — Independent — 19 May 1883

SUPWARD.";: OOTSCRKAY, SATURDAY, MAY 19, s883. Steps Towards Federation. IT is remarkable how some great public question, the solution of which involves to a large extent the future of a people, seems at times almost to have lost its public interest, and then again to stride with rapid pace to the front, and appears to indicate a speedy settlement. Such has been the case with the question of federation on several occasions, and at the present it. has' been. brought into great prominence by the proposals sub mitted by Mr Berry, and agreed to by the representatives of the colonies at the Postal Conference, with but little exception. A Postal Union with all the powers of the civilised world, in which the different colonies should each have a voice, must do much towards drawing closer the ties which unite the members of the Australasian group, and as our sympathies and interests would naturally be on the same plane as that of the mother-land, the mutual assistance thus given and receive...
