SHACKLETON'S PLANS. LONDON, Wednesday. The New Zealand section of the Trans- Antarctica Expedition, which is to land on the top of Ross Sea, and endeavour to   effect a junction with Sir Ernest Shack- leton's Trans-Continental party, will es- tablish depots for a distance of 300 miles. However, Sir Ernest hopes to accom- plish his daring and perilous journey without the aid of a single depot. PUBLISHED DAILY   First Copy Issued 10th June, 1867 SATURDAY, JANUARY 3, 1914 Australia has had many critics. Some of them were complimentary to the point of fulsomeness ; others were carpingly censorious. Some were men of eminence, whose standing commanded for them a wide audience ; others were men who had not won dilsinetiodn, and were not likely to. Indeed, some of our more of less illustrious visitors hia.e given the impre sion that they found time hanging hea- vily on their hands at home, and thought it would be a pleasant break in the dull routine of everyday life to slip across to Australia and write a book. Failing a "book", a series of articles for some   obscure magazine. Hence, had we been   inclined to hide our light under a bushel- and it must be confessed that is not one of our failings, even the most venemous critic has not suggested that it is, the great lights of the political and literary firniament, and likewise the rush!iglh...
