AN ANCIENT DICTIONARY. [Newspaper Article] — Albury Banner and Wodonga Express — 10 January 1896

m ANCIENT BICTIOMV. ' '* For some time past Egyptologists hav» been anxious %j discover some hierogly- ' . phic sign list compiled by the ancient Egyptians themselves, and at last such a documoab has come tov light. In Baby lonia and Assyria the existence of dic tionaries has been well attested by the discovery of a large number of syllabaries and glossaries, which so far to elucidate documents in the cuneiform character, but antil this most recent discovery nothing of the kind has been known to exist in _- Egyytian hieroglyphics. The discovery is owing to the labors of that distinguished Egyptologist, Professor Flinders Petrie, who as far back at 1884 noticed a large number of houses which, had evidently been destroyed by fire in the neighborhood of the ancient city of San. Mr. Patria obtained a large qiantity of pottery and other o'j.'cts from thia site, and a'so a valuable collection of papyrus rolls. THE CHILD-DEVIL. [Newspaper Article] — Albury Banner and Wodonga Express — 10 January 1896

THES omLD-BEVlL. - We all wondered why Octavius Nottage married at 17. Octavias Nott&ge is the youth who drives his. father's waggon to. fetch and carry linen from our town to the ' 'laundry in his own village. An ordinary. toy was Ootavius until a year or so ago ; just ruddy, and grubby; and scented with the boyish soent of brimstone and marbles. 1 'His' name bad been bestowed upon him by r J'hi8 parents out of compliment to a young gentleman of that family , in which Mrs. ? ' 1 ' . Nottage had been uursemaid— the eighth ? ' ^ young gentleman in a, family of eleven. TTrue, it so happened that Octavius Nottage 'waa 'a first and only child, but there be still '' ' s)me persons living who stride over trifles, , ' . ' and level all difficulties with the besom of disregard; and John and Jane Cottage were of this claes. When first we knew Octavius he was \\y crtutdy and mischievoup, travelling to and from town and village in the waggon as a sort of unpleasant consequence of John ...

THE STORYTELLER. 'PWIP ATTfTnWKT ATP1 TWTi!' ,: ??;?. - ? spTjTHf:;'--V.' ..'?' CHAPTEK XXYII.. ' It was the Sunday night after the dis covery of the murder of the unfortunate watchman at Charliou House, on the previous one. . The manufactory, as we have formerly observed, was built near an old mansion of that name. The family resided in tb,is house, whichi was separated by ornamental grounds and a plantation of verv ancient trees, from the buildings erected for the paper mill. Beyond these there was a tract of wild common, bordered by the hop plantations of an extensive grower who farmed under the Sidneys. Corn had for a , long time period been superseded throughout the district by the culture of this more valuable bitter. Bat in the midst of the acres of hops that extended a good day's ramble round Chailton, still stood the remains of a windmill that had once, found full employ mnt in converting the harvest of the neighboring country into flour and laieal. Its occupation bad now b...
