Local Intelligence. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 6 May 1848

Local Intelligence» The Murray district was visited on the 22nd ultimo with the severest thunder- storm the settlers recollect; it began about a quarter to three in the morning and lasted until half past four, during which time the report of the thunder and the flashes of lightning are said to have been most terrific. The electric fluid set fire to a tree near the residence of Mr. Birch, and a mare belonging to Mr. Bouglas, being frightened ran against a tree and was killed. We have heard of no other injury to property. The contracts for the erection of thö Government Sehool House have been ta- ken, and the materials are being collected. We understand it is not to be built of clay, but of stone, which the prisoners) ordered to Perth by Col. Clarke, for the sole purpose of the formation of the road- way, are now quarrying; the building is to be 42 feet long by 23 wide, and will present something of the appearance of the Court House. On Wednesday last, being the anniver- sary of the f...

State of Parties in England. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 6 May 1848

State of Parties in England. The National contains an article on the late elections in England, from the result of which it deduces this conclusion that " It is in vain for the despotic Govern- ments of the Continent to expect to op- pose an effective resistance to the progress of Liberal principles, when it is evident that in England, where the most formid- able aristocratic organization exists, the elections demonstrate a progressive de- cline of the aristocracy and the accession to power of the middle classes." "In following with attention," says the Na- tional, " the electorial movement of Eng- land, we have not found, either in the contests themselves or in the incidents which resulted from them, any fact to give that constitutional renewal a particu- lar character. It appears, on the Con- trary, that the contest has been distingu- ished by a general want of character. For that reason the old party appellations are insufficient to class the new Chamber. There are no longer any ...

New Settlement at Otago, New Zealand. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 13 May 1848

tffew Settlement at otago, rfew Zealand. Shortly after the last great religious split in Scotland, by which the Established Church in that kingdom waa relieved from the active opposition of a átrong 'internal party, and the seceding party assumed'the denomiüation'öf the Eree Church, became half-established as a separate body under a voluntary organisation, a desire was awakened in the latter to extend its efforts, or more properly speaking, to reassume its position as a propagator of Christian light and virtues in distant fields. With some such view as this the leaders of the Free Church opened a negotiation with the New Zealand Company, for the formation of a new settlement to be named New Edin- burgh. But the disturbances in New Zealand, and the derangement of the af- fairs of the Company, prevented anything being done at that tune in 'the matter. The Company having now obtained from the British Treasury conditional assistance which will give it a chance of completing its plans, h...

The Central Sun. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 13 May 1848

The Central Sun. There is one fact, first announced hy- the elder Herschel, which, although wen known to men of science, has been much less frequently brought into general no- tice than the others, in direct opposition too commonly received opinions. The prevalent idea respecting our sun is, that, with the exception of a movement round its-centre of gravity, »it occupies a fixed and invariable positions in the heavens. Recent researches have, however, verified the assertion, that, in common with the whole universe, it has what is called a ' movement of translation ' through space in obedience to some mighty and unknown influence, analogous to that which impels the minor planets and moons in their orbits. And we shall now endeavour to give an outline of the present state of our knowledge respecting this interesting subject. As we have already stated, the late Sir William Herschel was the first to demon- strate 'what had for some time been sus- pected by astronomers-the progressive mo...

The Editor of this Journal invites the free expres- sion of the opinions of his Correspondents, but can not be held responsible for them. The name and address of the writer must accompany each com- munication. To the Editor of the "Independent Journal." Sir,—Since mooting the subject of distillation, a temperance friend shrewdly inquired—"How wide I wished to open the door ? For the infor- mation of such a friend and all others of the same class, who may have had their fears alarmed, I beg to state, that I would open the door suffici- ently wide to admît of a still, and, in the next place, sufficiently wide to get out as much pure spirit, as would make colonial wine fit for a tem- perance man to drink, and then I would lock up the door ; that is-I would have distillation al- lowed for a particular and specific purpose. To throw the door wide open and without restriction, would be impolitic and ruinous on the part of the Government, and equally so on the part of the people. The colon...
