The Doctor's Question at West Wallsend. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 10 February 1900

The Doctor's Question at West Wallsend. (kro.m a correspondent. ) The dull stupor of West Wallsend has at last benn aroused by what is known as the Doctor's Question. Up to the present the employees of West Wallsend and Seaham Collieries have been compelled to subscribe to one doctor, much against their will, see ing that there is another doctor resi dent at ' Westy.' There is an agree ment suDDOsed to be in existence been the employees of Wpgt Wallsend and the said doctor — Dr. Hocken ; but one feature of it is that it says one month's notice has to be given by the doctor to cancel the agreement, while on the other hand it does not state what length of timo the notice re quired from the men must cover. The men have at last taken action and called seveial meetings with the result that a ballot has been taken to decide whether Doctor Hocken shall be the sole colliery doctor, or whether the men shall pay to which ever doc tor they prefer. The decision to pay to either doctor was carri...

SYDNEY PRINTERS. LACK ' COHESION. ENTHU SIASM. I XTELLIG EX C E. Ul a quorum. Truly a noble evidence of I the intelligence of the following of the calling of Caxton and Outtenberg ! This is the result of some four or five years of apathy on the part of the members, aided to some extent by the narrow and unintelligent views of unionism and the labor movement generally held by most of those who have held office during those years, however good their intentions may have been. How painfully evident iB the absence of an understanding of the true interests of the working-class is clear from the business transacted be fore the meeting was counted out, es pecially with some ma...

NEWCASTLE WHARF-WORKERS. RESOLVE TO ORGANISE "THE PEOPLE'S" WORK BEARS FRUIT. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 10 February 1900

NEWeRSTLE WHARF-- | WORKERS. RESOLVE TO ORGANISE. ?? TH!-: PEOPLE'S ' WORK. BEARS FRUIT. On iSunday last, as an outcome of the articles which have recently ap peared in these columns, the Newcastle Wharf l^abort'rs hold a meeting m the Surrey ville F'all to consider the advisability of forming themselves into a union for their own pro tection. Mr. Sam Smith, M.P., was present and addressed the meeting at great length, but studiously avoided mentioning the lact that he had come there in response to the demands of The People that he should take action in the matter. The audience was a very repre. sentative one, and, although Mr. Smith dealt with de tails; rather than with prin ciples, they listened eagerly, and were not slow to show their appreciation of .whatever, appeared to be a point made. The speaker went warily over/ his ground though, and was careful not to commit him self to anything like an aggressive attitude. And yet among these wharf-laborers there, is a grand desire for a...
