TnE progress of'..j-at is called the " Anglo-Saxon" race is at present rapid in this hemisphere. But races are now so mixed that it wou'dbe difficolt either to find.comprchensive name forthosewho use the English language, or to analyse the characteristics of the motley throng. The term Anglo-Saxon is hackneyed, but it was never a correct or sufficiently comprehensive term. The Norman and Celtic ingredients had a right to be recog nised, and now that the four seas of Bri tain enclose bat a moiety of the English speaking people, the genealogy of the race is becoming materially complicated. The cosmopolitan spirit induced by travcl, the constant process of "iron sharpening iron," which is goingon-the facilities for interconrse, which are daily extending-all tend to change the indivi dualities not only of the so-called Anglo Saxon race, but of the nations which it overruns. DESEsTIOn TROn BOARD SnIP.-Thomas Briggs and John Williamson, two articled seaman be longing to the lidp Statesman, were charged with desertion from that ship. They were asked by the Magistrates if they were willing to return to the xessel, and resume their duties. This overture being indignantly refused, and the Statesman being about to proceed to sea in a few day', they were ordered to be locked up till hiondlay next.
