The Pulpit and TnE Parliament.— Colonial Parliaments appear to be both invulnerable and incorrigible. Tho Pulpit prays for them Sunday after Sunday, while the Press fires intermittent shots at them during the week, and yet prayers and entreaties, censures and criticisms, fail in making them one whit the better. The follow ino- strav 'slurr' went in nl.mn nf a nranof fmm a pulpit not a hundred miles from Forbes on Sunday last : ' I think the Press of tho colony would act moro wisely, if instead of giving full reports of some of the late proceedings of Parliament, they had inserted a paragraph something to this effect. — Wo must decline noticing tho saying and doings of the honorable members of our Legislative Assembly during the recent debate, as their roiteration would most likely tend to the contamination and demoralization of our colonial youth.' — Forbes Times. BUTCHERS' MEAT. To the Editor of the Grenfell Record. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 5 August 1876

BUTCHERS' MEAT. To the Editor of the Grenfell Record. Sir, — I observe by your last issue that our local butchers have combined to still further rise tlie price, and I think that it is almost timo those who can sign themselves as I do, with a long monthly butcher's bill in my mind's eyo, should effect a counter combination. From one ot our I'orbes neighbours I learn that they have boldly taken the bull by the horns — they held a public meeting at which it was at first thought advisable to start a co-operative society ; but the difficulty was overcome by a couple of busi ness men guaranteeing to start in the butcher ing business and cause a bringing down in the price of meat, provided they were guaranteed -the support of all present. It is almost need less to state that that support was readily ac corded, and the new firm commenced operations on the lBt instant. In Parkes they have adopted a similar plan, and the question arises why should wo not do tho same here 1 I am sure a person...

Commercial. SYDNEY. MORT AND Co.'s REPORT. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 5 August 1876

Commercial. SYDNEY. Mort and Co.'s Report. Wool — There have been no public sales this week, and quotations are consequently unal tered. There is not much coming forward now, which is not perhaps to be regretted in the present depressed condition of tho home market and which it is hoped may be but temporary. The communication per cable being still inter rupted we are without lmformation beyond that prevously adverted to regarding the further course of the market. Sheepskins : We have no alteration to quote on last week's quotations. Hides : There was an unusually largo supply for sale this morning, and as late London advices were not considered encouraging by shippers, a considerable fall on the prices cur rent a few weeks since had to be submitted to ; as owing to tho dulncss in tho demand for leather, and the comparatively low figures obtainable tho local tanners are very shy of increasing their stocks, and accordingly purchase very sparingly. For some time the colonial markets ha...

HARRISON, JONES, & DEVLIN'S REPORT. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 5 August 1876

Harrison, Jones, & Devlin's Report. Leather : This week sales passed off with great dulness, and the greater portion of the catalogues were held over. Sole is much lower in price, caused by the unsatisfactory state of the English market. Dressed leathers are also lower. Quotations : Sole best (town use), 9d to 10d ; shipping, best, 8id to 9d ; medium, 7;Jd to 8|d ; kip, best, 17d to 18d : medium 14d to 16d ; calf, 35d to 36d ; harness, 13d to 14d ; bag, 14s to 16s ; cow tweed, 22d to 24d ; horse ditto, lOd to 22d. Wool : There have been no wool sales held this week, which deprives us of any information upon which to base our remarks under this head. Sheepskins : As the condition of the wool market nearly altogether regulates the sales of sheepskins, we can only this week refer to our remarks in the preced ing paragraph, being without any public sales of sheepskins this week, consequently without any thing to report. Tallow: 156 casks offered, 64 Bold ; there was no alteratio...

UNFOUNDED SUSPICION. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 5 August 1876

; UNFOUNDED SUSPICION. ' From, information received ' is too often the statement made by the police upon taking up any trival case, which for lack of something better to do, they desire to make as much out of as they possibly can. It is one of the most common failing of human oeings to jump at conclusions, and possessing this inherent frailty, it is the practice of our peace officers to contact in tho discharge of their duties as guilty until he is proved otherwise. Often the words quote d above are merely given as an excuse for proceeding in a case in which the suspicion of some wrong-doing or other has first had its origin in the brain of the official, who desires to work up a case ; but sometimes the ' infor mation recoived ' is from a near neighbour of the party sought to bo accused, the result of some trifling ill-feeling, and as such ought to but cautiously received. On Tuesday last one of these cases of ' from information received ' was heard at our local police court, in whi...

WARDEN'S COURT. WEDNESDAY, 2ND AUGUST. Before the Warden. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 5 August 1876

WARDEN'S COURT. ' Wednesday, 2nd August. Before the Warden. This was a case in which one Joseph Marks objected to one John Keir taking up two acres of ground at the Two-mile, which, it was alleged, contained a spring of water 'used by the residents of that place and tho complainant's family. Joseph Marks deposed : I pegged out a portion of land on tlie Two-mile ; I improved it ; Keir also pegged out two acres ; there is a spring and a creek on it ; my family and others use the water from the creek for drinking purposes. To John Keir : I wrs not aware that you had applied for a piece of land at the land office ; you put in your pegs after I made my improvements j there are £15 or £20 worth of improvements on my land ; to the best of my belief the spring is taken in by your pegs j there is a creek there too ; I put in proper pegs, and they were visible enough. Charles Pinkstone deposed : I know a cer tain piece of land in dispute between Keir and Marks; the land is at the top of the T...
