THE LICENSING ACT. [Newspaper Article] — The Telegraph, St Kilda, Prahran and South Yarra Guardian — 12 May 1866

. THE LICENSING; -ACT It needs no ,elaborate argument to prove that the prevailing vice of intemperance is a earful scourge to society at large. Whether we look at it from a physical, economic, or moral point of view its effects are equally disastrous. ' Who that has any knowledge of the history of this colony can doubt that intemperance has corroded its mineralswealth, blighted its fertile;soil, and dried up many of itssprings of human happiness ? It produces more domestic misery and strife, and niord disease and crime than anjr other single vice to which the Anglo-saxon race is addicted. When dealing with the subject of intemperance, then, we are.not treating of an imaginary evil or of an exceptional fobrm of social depravity; we are treating of one universally admitted to exist, and ond , too, that loudly calls fbr prompt legislative inter fere...
