Ipswich Revelry. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro — 24 February 1883

Ipswich Revelry. BASHFOP.D'S farewell ball, in the local School of Arts, " took the cake" at Ipswich. Its chief charm was its non-exclusiveness. Mra Blogg, of tLe " Uppah Ten," didn't object to rub shoulders with Mrs. Ologg, of the next gradient; the here-and-there " squat tali " forgot to bring his " jam" with him as an antidote to the more plebeian man of commerce ; A-dolphus Fitz Blueblood took no thought for his eye-: glass, but hugged Mariar or'Angelina through the " mazy dance"-we couldn't get this par. out without using this phrase-or handed Sarah Jane her ice cream, as if there were .no social divisions as his every day instincts prompts him to recognise. In fact, it was jowl and jollity, beauty and chivalry, glitter and glare, gas and gaiters-anything and everything- All Ipswich turned out to it-i. e., " every body who was anybody," and a good many who were nobodies, top. It was a juvenile ball-that is to say, all those were excluded who were under nine months and over. 1)0...

Horrible Atrocity at Cairns. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro — 24 February 1883

A TALE of horror from Cairns. Rudely encamped in their squalid and insignificant bark mia-mias, were a few poor miserable inoffensive blacks-chiefly decrepid old men, bony and agued gins, with one or two young boys and girls. Within a few miles, was the more pretentious forest dwelling of a noble white man-a civilised superior being, who could afford to look down upon the " darned niggers." He was engaged in the trade of cedar-getting, and had under him several Kanakas. Wearied with daily toil, and aching for a   little glorious relaxation, he bent the energies of his superior and cultivated mind towards devising for his noble self, and his less noble Kanakas, a little diver- sion. Right here the miserable, helpless, inoffensive blackfellows engaged his attention. Fired with a frolicsome ambition, he primed his Kanakas with as much strike-me-dead Northern rum as would place the volcanic devil in them in a state of active eruption, armed them to the teeth, and led them o...

Queensland Figaro "Fear God; Speak evil of none; Stick to the Truth; and never be done." BRISBANE: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY. 24,1883. What will they say in England? [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro — 24 February 1883

" Fear God; Speak evil of none; Stick to the Truth; and never be done.'' BRISBANE: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1883. What will they say in England? THE awful story which we copy into another column from the Cairns Telegraph causes all the manhood in our nature to tingle with shame. Do we belong to a race of men or devils ? Is it really possible that so terrible a tale has been told in two Northern papers without one word of comment or one expres- sion of disgust ? And after all the righteous indignation which Queenslanders have exhibited concerning Mr. Wisker's article in the Fort- nightly upon our treatment of the aboriginals and kanakas in Queensland, the blush hotly mounts to the face as we think,-What will they say in England ? Time was, and that not long ago, when the columns of the Courier and Queenslander, our leading journals, were with vigorous letters and articles upon this very Black and White question. The tales of horror these brought to light called for a commission of enqu...
