CRICKET. GUNNING DEFEATS FORBES. [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Advocate — 19 December 1911

GUNNING DEFEATS FORBES. Gunning and Forbes C.Cs. met at the Forbes ground on Saturday, in connection with, the local competition, victory resting with Gunning on the first inning?, Forbes made an effort to secure a straight-out win, by closing their second innings, and sending Gunning to the wickets the second time. There was an hour and a quarter to do it in, but Gunning successfully played the "rock," iosing only three wickets. A feature of the match was Gaggin's innings of j.02 not 'out. "Kruger," as his friends know him, went at everything, hitting twelve 4's and four G's: He played really good cricket, not giving a chance. Scores:— Forbes.—First Innings. • F. E. Fan-and, b T. The Forbes Advocate, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1911. SCIENTIFIC FARMING. [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Advocate — 19 December 1911

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1911. SCIENTIFIC FARMING. In supporting the principle of fallowing as a means of successful farming, the mistake of being dogmatic must be avoided. What seems an excellent plan to many may have its weaknesses in the eyes of others, and to take up the attitude that farming without fallowing must of necessity be a failure, would be to go a long way towards deferring the general acceptance of this modern method of treating the land. A farmer who has been for years tilling fertile soil, blessed with a good and regular rainfall, when advised to fallow, may not be able to see eye to eye with his adviser. His reply might be that year in and year out he derived from his land a great deal more than he put into it. Even if he had before him a practical demonstration of the results of fallowing, his hesitancy in following the new plan might at least be capable of argument. He could contend that it; was better, or as well, to crop his land yearly for an average return of f...

In reply to-our representations regarding the unsatisfactory transmission of wires, the department states that it has been decided to recommend that a new line be erected from Sydney- to Forbes, with a duplex working between the stations. Dunphy, recently licensee of the Hotel Victoria, has been served with a writ by Elsmore and Co., hotel brokers of Sydney, for £ 90 commission on the sale of the unexpired portion of lease of the Hotel Victoria, to Mr E. MANSON & CO., DRAPERY SPECIALISTS. [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Advocate — 19 December 1911

MANSON & CO., DRAPERY SPECIALISTS. Iii our description of the Forbes shops' Xmas preparations appearing last issue, there is an error which calls for correction—-a correction that we gladly make. Our representative who inspected the shops to get material for the article referred to,had very little time at his disposal, is, like "The Advocate," a newcomer, and in the haste of his inspection, no doubt, grocery departments, mercery departments, boot departments, crockery departments, fancy departments, and many other departments must have swum excitedly before his imagination, until one got mixed up with another, and ,in fact, it became a case f department 011 the brain. "Department' was the cause—the effect was a grocery department tacked on to Messrs Manson and Co.'s popular and long-established drapery business. Now, as a matter of fact, Mr A. J. Baldock, who is Manson and Co., knows a little of a lot of things, and a great deal of what he specialises in, but he doesn't spec...

POISONOUS OQBOI GRASS. SAMPLES SENT FROM FORBES. Mr Petrie's Analysis. Our readers will remember that in our issue of last Tuesday, we reported the loss of 104 sheep out of a flock of 6000, the property of Mr Robert Porter, which passed over the town common on Saturday, the 9th inst., .halting on the way at the pound yard-;-Where they left 104 of their number behind owing to poison grass. Mr Dowling, the Stock Inspector, when the matter was reported to him, put the poison down as owing to infection by grasshoppers, but we appended to this view \the results of investigations recently .made by Dr. James M.
