SPIRIT OF THE PRESS. MISMANAGEMENT IN AUSTRALIA. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 26 August 1858

SPIRIT OF THE PRESS. S1I.SMAKAGEMEXT IX AUSTRALIA. {From the. Tinut ) We have often called attention to die unfjr tunate position in whicli our niismanageniDnt has pliced the Australian colonies, and to the bitter fruits that they are likely to gather from it. We showed ou a. recent occasion how tie monopoly of land which the Government of UnMnnd had created in favour of the pastoral :losves had not onlf dwarfed ths energies uf these young communities, but had driven diets into a course of ultra democratic legislation whicli mast in no long time force upon them govern ments formed after die American instead of this English type, and by so doing both weaken their connection with ourselves, a#d expose them tc countless eril-. But inexorable justice docs not ? stop hire, and we ourselves, who have inflicted this fatal injury on our remote dependency, are not destined to escape die ill effects of oar own folly and presumption. THE DARLING DOWNS GAZETTE. DRAYTON, THURSDAY, AUGUST 26, 1858. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 26 August 1858

THE DARLING DOWNS GAZETTE. DRAYTON, THURSDAY, AUGUST 26, 1858. THE northern colony when it is established will, if the recent accounts from Port Curtis are to be credited, have at least two paying gold fields in full operation, namely, BOOBOO BOOBOO on one side, and the Fitzroy River on the other. In this respect, therefore, it will not be much behind the most favoured colonies, and more fortunate than some of them that, with all their efforts, have not discovered the much coveted diggings. We never could agree with those financial philosophers, who set, or affected to set, small value on the possessions of rich gold fields. It   may be true in the abstract, as they assert, that a piece of ground cultivated with potatoes could, in the course of years, return more value than what is anually obtained from a similar quantity of ordinarily rich gold bearing land. But some- how or other, the practical result is very differ- ent in the two cases. The potatoe cultivation may g...

The bridegroom, instead of taking bis intend*. d bride to the church door and accom panying her to the altar, walked thither with the brides's sister, who was one of the brides maids. The bride appeared to have thought that her intended husband had changed his mind at the last moment, and she retiied »nto a pew in a very dejected state of mind. The ceremony proceeded, and it was not until the clergyman came to the important question, ' Wilt tbou have this woman to be thy wedded wife f ' tbat tlie bridegroom was conscious of bis mistake.
