The Tractor on the Farm [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 5 April 1924

The TFactor on the Farm By "Heather Jock." If one can run his memory bac' just a few years to his travels in the farming areas of Australia, he will not recollect having seen very many motor cars, and scarcely one far:n tractor. If he travels in the sanme arca to-day he will find hundreds of motor cars, and one might now say hundreds of tractors, thus prominentl' revealing on the screen of Australian rural life the wonderful wealth of Australia's production. The use of the motor car to the man on the land, as a means of bri.nging him into better touch with civilisation, cannot be denied; whereas it has also proved to he a decided factor !io making life in the back blockl=3 much more inviting to those who have a desire to unfold Australia's wealth. The man, however, who looks at the advent of the farm tractor with F. Irocad and open mind and a keen eye t' business economics cannot, . we think, endorse the mad rush that is hei.ng made practically all over the farming; areas of Austral...

FOOTSCRAY FOOTBALL CLUB. [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 5 April 1924

*FOOTSCRAY FOOTBALL CLUB ': Members' tickets are selling well this season for the tricolors, and the hope is general that next season's football will be played in League company. All of last season's players are available. Norman Ford, Con M'Carthy, On Samson, Mordern, Alex. Eason, Zinnick dnd McIntyre are already showing glimpses of their true form.. " Chook" Howell, who has seven' weeks' disqualification to see out before he again follows the leather,, in, tends to start getting himself fit right away. Many promising juniors have accepted the invitation to prac tice. Les Punch, centre man from Preston; undoubtedly the best man, in that position last year in the V.J.F.A., is one of the recruits. A hefty young ster, named Thomson, from local Baptist team, looks like develop ing into a follower of class. L. Beer, who went from Yar raville to South Melbourne League, and played intermit tently for a couple of seasons, is another player that should make good. He has every at tribute for...

Selecting the Season's Team Advice by ALEX. EASON, the Well-Known 'Baller [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 5 April 1924

Selecting the Season's Team Advice by ALE. EIASON, the Well-hnown 'Baler Doubtless, thle usual large num ber of enthusiast.ic juniors will be seen at practice thiu year wilh the senior club, battling for a place in the eighteen. At this time of the sceaon the members of the match committee are on their miettle, and they, in particular, must watch closely every point of the new players before making a final se lection. In choosing from this army of juniors, the club has a task which often proves very deceiving. These lads are generally judged on their play in practice matches, in which I maintain that they do not get a full opportunity to exhibit their ability, the result being that good players join up with other teams and in a short time prove their worth. It in admitted that all the clubs, in this respect make mistakes, but the action of Footscray in dropping Russ, of North Melbourne, I con sider was a very had mistake. We were badly in need of a wing man at the time and the form ...

POULTRY NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 12 April 1924

POULTRY NOTES. By "Tight Feather." To makc poultry keeping a success and profitable it is necessary to only keep the hens that lay well and weed out all the non-layers. There are different ways of select. ing the utility bird, but a very useful method and one well worth cultivat ing is the observation of fowls' ap pecarance. The facial features should be carefully notcd, giving preference to all birds with smooth faces, keen eyes and an eye that reflects bright ness along with happiness, so to, speak, or what might be termed a "fresh" face. This applies to young birds; or after a year's laying these characteristics show that such birds have done the heavy laying, and no ill-effects have been registered, and that they will continue laying well for another season at least. Temperament plays a vital part in egg production when it comes to the actual number of eggs laid in the twelve months. It is the docile, good tempered bird we nced to aim at to trap-nest and breed -from, also to sen...

HOME GARDENING. [Newspaper Article] — Sunshine Advocate — 12 April 1924

HOME. GARDENING. -0 By "Heather Jock." In the home garden there is prob ably no fruit that gives more result to at the grower than the delicious straw- kI berry, provided it is properly cared ot for, What more delicious plate can be had than that of strawberries and in cream? And what jam is there that makes the palate crave more than that in of the strawberry? When properly pl managed it has also the decided ad- b vantage of having a longer yearly pro- tc ducing period than any other garden c' fruit known to the home garden. It n is a plant of particularly easy culture; but, at the same time, like nearly all other plants, it has its own little I ways, which, if catered for, will give c gratifying results. h In preparing land for planting the strawbcrry, do not dig too deeply, and if possible dig in a liberal dressing a of (preferably) sheep manure, fairly well rotted. If that is not procurable, C then cow or pig manure is next in a preference. Before attempting to plant the ground ...
