RAVAGES OF INSECTS. Tho United States Department of Agriculture, Washington, D.C., Ivas ¡carefully estimated the average an- omal loss to thc agricultural interests ¡of thc United States caused by tho ravages of injurious insects on culti .vated plants only, and finds that ¡300,000,000 dollars per year is as near as can be estimated of the ab- ove loss. The wheat plant suffers as much, perhaps, from thc ravages of insects as any other single crop grown in the United States, and two insects cause by far the greatest am- ount of this damage. One of these is thc Hessian fly, which in some single years has caused an estimated loss of 60,000,000 fdollars in the United States alone. In some foreign coun- tries this insect has been the cause pf great famines. ,
