VICTORIA AND THE JEWS. HOW THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND OWED HER THRONE TO SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 September 1897

VICTORIA AND THE JEWS. HOW THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND OWED HER THRONE TO' SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE. in these days of the Victoria Jubilee, many stories are told about the Queen-Empress, and all seem to interest the public. The fact that the present Lord Mayor of London is a Jew reminded a story-teller of the following incident in the history of the Queen. Her father, the Duke of Kent was a poor man and the intimate friend of Moses Montefiore, one of the leading men in the London Jewish community. They had tastes in common, and' the Jew likedthe poor nobleman because he never asked for money, while the nobleman admired the Jew for his charity and honesty. Their friendship was never threatened by discussions on . political or religious, topics. At the time when an heir was expected in the family of the Duke of Kent, Montefiore urged his friend to take his wife to England, so that there might be no obstacle in the way ot the child's advancing to the throne: although there were then three lives b...

Appkoachisg the Penitential Days we rehearse special prayers for the acceptance of our penitence and for Divine' grace in our atone, ment. This causes us to consider the past and to recognise that we have been. very lax in our .great Jewish responsibilities, and that one in particular, which is the intellectual and moral law of our being, ': that we promote our own Teal happiness in the exact proportions we contribute to others.' .For example, take the .Jewish Benevolent Societies, and our treatment ?of those less fortunate ones in the eom-irunity, 3,nd ask ourselves have we completed our full duties to them. Charity is the brightest star in the Hebrew diadem ; it is a chain of love forged by the golden rule. It does not -consist in gifts, but in gentleness and generosity -of spirit. We should accustom ourselves to think of the distresses of human life and of the / 'ways to relieve them. A word of kindness to 'the unfortunate is as welcome as the smile of an angel, and a hearty hand...

[?] Accounts are not yet completed, but it is anticipated that the net result ot the Bazaar and Garden Fete held J .at Mrs. Neville Cohens residence ' Liverynga' \ Elizabeth Bay, will realise .1:350. ^ Mr. Louis Pulver is still in Sydney Hospital, the operation, the surgeons consider, has been successful. ..But it will be some considerable time before he will leave the Institution. Miss Pulver is in constant -attendance on her brother — it is proving a very trying ?time for her. The Hebrew Schools are still in charge of the acting ; head-master, Mr. M. A. Cohen, and satisfactory . progress has continued. On Saturday the 11th inst, Melbourne Hirsch, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Cantor, was Barrnitzvah. The young gentleman acquitted himself very creditably, which reflects much praise on his teacher, Mr. Phillip Cohen. On Saturday and Sunday -evenings, Mrs. Cantor entertained a number of her -friends at her residence Good Hope-st., Paddington, when all present enjoyed themselves...

SAN FRANCISCO, CAL. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 September 1897

SAN FRANCISCO, CAL. . For the past week the very atmosphere seemed full of -.the expected arrival of the Rev. Isadore Myers, who .had recently accepted a call from the Ohabai Sholom Congregation of this city, and who was making a trip across the Continent to the new field of his labors. Though none of his congregation had ever seen or heard of him. he has not come among us a stranger, as his good deeds and reports of indefatigable work in the furtherance of Judiasm had long preceded him. When the Eastern train glided into Oakland station last Thursday a crowd of prominent members of Ohabai Sholom, accompanied by their wives, boarded the cars to bid the rabbi and his bride welcome — and a hearty welcome it was. On reaching the citv they were led to a carriage that stood in waiting and driven to their home, which was brilliantly lighted and profusely decorated with ferns and bright blossoms in honor of the occasion. At their residence was a still larger number of ladies and gentlemen ...

MANCHESTER. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 17 September 1897

MANCHESTER. The most deplorable event that has happened for these many years is the sad death of Rev. Joseph Yappee on June 24. Rabbi Yappee undoubtedly was the best Talmudical scholar in the United Kingdom, and came from his native home in Russia to take up a call in Manchester. He was the only Rabbi who ever dared to contradict or rather gainsay Dr. Adler, Chief Rabbi oi England, in matters pertaining to some ' Schochtim.' L ?

NO PERFECT WORK BUT GOD'S. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 24 September 1897

NO PERFECT WORK BUT GOD'S. -? I will build,' said the architect, ' mansions more fair Marble columned, and stately and grand, Mammoth domed, perfection base, turret and stairs, And the winds the fame of the builder shall bear To the uttermost parts of the land.' ' I will paint,' said the artist, 'a picture sublime, Rainbow tinted and wonderfully quaint; The world shall bow down to this picture of mine, For I'll dip my brush in the river of time, And the lights of eternity paint,' ' I will write,' said the poet, 'a beautiful song, In the glory and strength of my might. I will liberate truth. The shakles of wrong Shall be broken, and sin, red-handed and strong, Shall be slain by the words I shall write.'' 'Neath the broad dome of heaven's encircling blue, Sculptured columns reared stately and vast, And the architect smiled as the palace grew, But the finger oi time pierced those columns through, While the mountains, God's buildings, stood fast. The picture lacked something which giowe...
