LAST SATURDAY'S GAMES. JOHNSON'S CREEK V. YARCK. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 June 1908

ILAST SATURDAY'S GAMES. BY ONMLOOEEK. JOHNSON'S CREEK V. YARCK. On Saturday afternoon last, the above teams met on the Yarck oval, and as a good game was expected, there was a large attendance of spectators present. a good number journeying from Alexandra. The onlookers got what they expected by witnessing. a good game and very fair umpiring up to half time; but after that the gamne and the umpiring was very 'much below par. Last year Yarck had the making of a good team, but they failed through lack of system. This season they have a much stronger team, and same excellent footballers, and from the way in which they played in the first half qf the game, it looked as If they had overcome some of the faults which proved failures the previous season. Unfortun ately I found it was not so as the game proceeded, and I saw that they had faults far more serious than their urevious ones. Yet what a pity in such a fine team, with such manly, clever and fair footballers as Martin, Porteous, the...

TUESDAY. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 June 1908

TUESDAY. Mr. Archer gave another very interest. ing and informative lecture on Cattle Breeding and The Dairy Herd. He said that in a system of good management, it was essential to keep good stock, as well. bred animals gave a greater return at less cost than ill-bred ones, that a farmer ought to breed his own stock in preference to buying, because, besides lessening the risk of introducing disease-as every pro gressive- farmer will be doing his best to improve his herd by breeding and rearing the calves from the best animals, and cul. ling out the inferior-it will only be the culls that will be offered in the market. Particular importance was attached to the choice of the bull for use in the herd, as it is an old saying that the bull is half the herd, and he certainly has very much greater influence on the herd than is generally recognised. For this reason it should be ascertained that the bull's, mother is a pood butter producer, in the case of a dairy herd, and by this .means the ...

Land Settlement in West Australia. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 June 1908

Land Settlement in West Australia.. On Tuesday evening last, in the shire aall, Mr. H. S. Ranford. an officer of the Lands Department of Western Australia, gave a lecture on land settlement in that state. The address was illustrated by 160 limelight views, and throughout was frequently applauded. Mr. Ranford ex plained why it was the officials from the department of which he was a member, were in Victoria. It was to bring the re sources of West Australia before the people, for it had come to the knowledge of his Government that there was a great earth hunger in the Eastern States. Only the other day in Victoria 260 blocks of land had been offered for sale, and there were 3,000 applicants for them, whilst in N.S.W. there were 320 applicants for four blocks only. From Victoria they had people inquiring about the resources of West Australia, and so his Govern isnmt had decided to send lecturers to the various states to make the immense re sources of W.A. known. The total area of West A...

Alexandra & Yea Standard NEC TEMERE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, JUNE 12, 1908. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 June 1908

iºFIxandra & ~ga *tandanud IZO TEMERE NEC TIMIDW.' PFRIDAY, JUNE 12, 1908. Oxu of the n.got progressive features of Australian development is the re cognition and adoption of up-to-date scientific methods of farming. There is perhaps a no more important branch in this industry than the establish ment of agricultural classes in all centres of rural industry. It is only by closely studying, and as far. as possible, applying the methods of the most progressive countries of the world can we hope to advance the agricultural interests of Australia. In this view,'then, the 'advance of agri. culture in America gives the clearest possible indication of the line along which we are bound to develop our natural resources. In the United States the present Australian situation was reached a good many years ago, when practically all the choice land had been alienated, and also a good deal 'of the inferior land. At one time the current idea of the American farmdr was that of an individual w...

Diversion of the Acheron River. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 19 June 1908

ilversion of the Acheron River. It has been known for some time that the Metropolitan Board of Works had deesins on the Acheron River for purpose of augmentina the city water nsuply. It was also known that the government would not be a pvalty to the itdoption of the scheme, under advice of experts of the water supply department, and of the Royal Comntission that sat some time back. It appears that grave fears are anticipated. According to the city Press, the chairman of the I oard of Works "has been successful in his efforts to in duce the Government to permit a diver. eion of the Acheron waters, although Mr. Swinburn has declared that if an emer gency arises his objection to a temporary diversion may he oscrcomo." No doubt the situation is alarming, but those who are likely to feel the tapping of head of the Acheron also view the action of the Board of Land Works and government with alarm, inasmuch as the flow of the Goulburn River will be seriously inter fered with, and judging fr...

ýlt andrn & it ga $t ndrtd I NEc TEMERE NC TIMID. FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 1908. THE serious revolt and heavy fighting which is taking place in Korea is news that, in view of past rumors, was not unexpected. There had been appear ing from time to time cables to the effect that the Japanese rule over Korea was bitterly resented by the natives of that country. At the time of the Russian and Japanese conflict, the Koreans were led to believe by the friendly and benevolent expressions of goodwill on the part of the Japanese that it was the most desirable thing in all the world that Russia should be ousted from her dominant position. After an enormous waste of life and money, this object was achieved; but, casting aside all their professions of good faith the Japanese occupied the country and brought to bear a system of government that was ten times worse than Russian system. Japan has now had two costly was for the virtual possession of Korea; the one just mentioned and the one with Chi...
