WOLUMLA. [Newspaper Article] — Southern Star — 4 July 1900

WOLUMLA. (From our Correspondent.) Comparative wind— spporlati\o storm — positive gale — and bitterly cold. Such has been tho state of the weather during the past week. And such also the condition of the human frame of mind in consequence thereof. Truly we have beon 6orely timnted to break the whole of tho commnndmeuts in one act. Many nnd viriod are tho experi ences relatod by 'travellers of their narrow ei-capes of falling timber. Fortunately no serious accidents have bo far been reported; and iho only dam»ge locally was the unroofing of a few sheds and out-hoisas. I am quite in occurd with the views expressed by 'Rip Van Winkle' 'in your last issue as to tbe necessity of the district's awakening from its long Blumberc, and once again aeitating for the Edon-Pega Railway. Many thous ands ol pounds havo beon Bpent in sur veys and trial surveys of the once pro- ;'( posed line of railway from the port of * Eden to Bega; and of a line to connect with the Monaro. We once had a strong br...

No title [Newspaper Article] — Southern Star — 4 July 1900

In yesterday's issue of our contempor ary, Mr. VV. S Lavington makes a fooble effort to reply to our strictures on tba proposed leasing of the Bega River oyster beds, and his attempt to enlist public sympathy in his applica tion for a lease will, we fear, be wide of tbe mark. He begins by stating that tbe leasing of portion of the river to oyster cultivators would be a bron to the majority of people, toeing tbat so few availed themselves of tbe op portunity of collecting them. What lovely inconsistency ! Was it not set forth in the petition whioh Mr. Lav ington took around for signature that there was danger of the river being left bare of oysters owing to the depredations of the publio. And aa to tbero bung no underhand work in the matter, why was the petition not forwarded through tho member for the district, as isalwaysdoneiosuoli matters. Then, as to access to the portions still left open, Mr. Lavington states that there are several practical roads right through to the localitie...

The Horse of the British Devil. The intelligence of the horse is ad mirably dopicted in u little it'cirlun wliich occurred in a small Boer ctunp near Lsdysmith.
